 De eerste workshop Box-making in Ghana is achter de rug!

Gisteren kwamen 4 vrouwen het uitproberen en ze waren heel erg enthousiast! ;)

The very first Box-making workshop in Ghana has taken place!

Yesterday 4 women come to my place to try it out and they were all filled with enthusiasm!

 

 

Na het zien van mijn dozen konden ze niet wachten om er zelf eentje te maken

Terwijl ik ons huisje nog lang niet op orde heb! Maar dat heeft ook geen haast: 

met vrienden samen werken is veel leuker!

 After having seen my boxes they couldn't wait to get started and make one themselves

Although I haven't quite finished settling in, I was ready to give it a go!

Doing fun things with friends gives me more energy!

 

Meet my new friends!

Ieder bracht zelf de stof mee voor de buiten- en binnenkant. De rest lag voor ze klaar.

Niet iedereen kreeg haar doos af, maar eentje wel en dit is haar resultaat:

They all brought their own fabrics for the in- and outside of the box, I prepared the rest.

Not all of them finished the box completely except for one as you can see here:

De kralen zijn uit haar voorraad en vormen werkelijk 'the finishing touch'! 

The beads are from her stash and really are the finishing touch!

Nu moet ik gaan nadenken over verschillende mogelijkheden voor het geven van workshops

Zoals het maken van kits met voorgesneden karton en 'lappies' (Afrikaanse stofjes),

verschillende soorten dozen om te maken, etc

Kortom: het ijzer smeden terwijl het nog heet is!

Right now I have to start with a concept for giving more workshops, like preparing kits with pre-cut cardboards and a set of different African fabrics, different levels of making boxes, etc

I have to move forward and strike while the iron is hot!

Vakken vullen!

De eerste week van mijn verblijf in Santiago stond in het teken van de weg weer vinden,

in de supermarkt, in de lokale Gamma, in de buurt, en zien uit te vinden waar ik in de buurt dat ene ding kan vinden... Daar ben ik elke keer weer heel wat uurtjes zoet mee.

My first week in Santiago is filled with finding my way around again, at the groceries, the local Home Depot, in the neighbourhood, and just looking around to see where I can find that one little thing... Every time again this takes me hours and hours.

Omdat we niet konden slagen in een simpel kastje voor in de gang ben ik zelf maar aan de slag gegaan met een dik soort karton ;))

Because we couldn't find a small side table I simply made one myself out of curated cardboard ;))

A Gecko as decoration

Al ons huisraad is naar Nederland verhuist en dit appartement is nog vreselijk kaal, maar met wat simpele handgrepen hoop ik het toch gezellig te maken. 

Met deze Gecko is er weer een nieuw begin gemaakt

Because all our furniture has been moved to Holland we need to have some new decorations to cheer up the place. This Gecko is a first fun piece

Het gangkastje is heel simpel en als we er genoeg van hebben dan verdwijnt het gewoon bij oud papier!

Vorige week deed ik mee met een wedstrijd van de Quilting Gallery en dankzij al jullie stemmen kwam ik op de 3de plaats! Hiermee heb ik een abonnement op The Quilt Pattern Magazine gewonnen, een internet tijdschrift. Een speciaal bedankje gaat naar de Yahoo Group Patchepinte hier in Brazilië waar ik deel van uit maak. My DS is back to his town, NYC, where the weather is hot and humid. Here it has turned chilly and with no heating system in the house we are dressed in many layers. If the sun comes out the house warms up a little. I am not looking forward to some rainy days, they say will come over the weekend. 
On the streets dogs are wearing sweaters, so funny! Just like on this picture from Google images, they wear hair clips and shiny ear decorations, some even wear shoes.

Mijn zoon is weer terug op zijn plek in NYC. Daar is het behoorlijk warm maar hier is het koud geworden! We zitten nu in huis met allerlei laagjes aan omdat er geen verwarming in huis is. Als de zon schijnt, warmt het een beetje op, maar ze hebben regen voor het weekend voorspeld en daar kijk ik niet naar uit.
Op straat dragen veel honden truitjes, zoals op dit plaatje van Google images. Dat ziet er grappig uit naast hun haarklipjes, oorbellen en soms ook schoentjes. Die van mij zien er dan maar slordig uit...

I told you about a sewing group I was going to. Well, I found new friends! They are as crazy as I am about sewing, patching, quilting and colours! This gives me a warm feeling and makes settling into this new country a bit easier. Yes, I still not feel settled in. It is something that's called 'expat dip', a new adventure and you should go out and make new friends but you have no energy to do so. With the kids out of the house, it is such a different story to move to a new country. It needs time.

Het naai/quiltgroepje is leuk! Ik heb er een paar nieuwe vriendinnen bij die net als ik van naaien, patchen, quilten en kleuren houden. Dit is zo fijn en maakt het wonen in een nieuw land een beetje makkelijker. Mijn hart is hier nog niet, zo zonder de kinderen is het verhuizen naar een ander werelddeel niet makkelijk. Wat je noemt een 'expat-dip'. Spannend en een nieuw avontuur, maar er niet van kunnen genieten. Het heeft tijd nodig.

Chilling

Another week has flown by. Hanging around with my DS, cooking him some wholesome meals, watching movies, visited some museums etc. Not a lot of sewing done. Instead he helped me with a picture collage I am doing on the computer. It is going to be a present for a friend I just got to know here, but unfortunately she is already leaving SP. I will show you when she has opened it.
Tatatadah! Today I am going to a sewing group, here in São Paulo, for the first time. I will bring this quilt with me and some other small hand work. I am very much looking forward to socialize with like minded people, you know what I mean!

Weer een week voorbij, wat vliegt de tijd! Samen met mijn DS lekker rondgehangen, hem eens goed te eten gegeven, samen films gekeken, een paar musea bezocht, etc. Niet zoveel achter de naaimachine gezeten dus. In plaats daarvan heeft hij mij geholpen met een foto collage die ik op de coputer aan het maken ben. Het is een cadeau voor een vriendin die ik hier pas heb leren kennen, maar nu alweer vertrekt uit SP. Ik zal het je laten zien als zij het heeft uitgepakt.
Jippie! Vandaag ga ik voor de eerste keer naar een quilt/naai-groepje, hier in São Paulo. Deze quilt neem ik met me mee, samen met wat klein handwerk. Ik kijk er erg naar uit om een nieuw clubje van gelijk gestemde zielen te leren kennen, je snapt vast wel wat ik bedoel!

Gecko Dance

What started as a squarish convergence quilt with a pattern by Ricky Tims, turned out to be an abundance of circles and pastel colours

Wat begon als een strakke 'convergence' quilt met rechte hoeken naar een patroon van Ricky Tims, is veranderd in een zee van cirkels en pastelkleuren

 

It measures 90 cm (35.5") square

 De maat is 90 vierkante cm

Rose-Anne came up with this name (long live Skype!)

 Lieve Rose-Anne bedacht de naam (lang leve de Skype)

I love this turquoise

 De turquoise kleur komt zo mooi naar boven

Maybe it sounds weird, but I am actually very proud with the outcome! It was a constant searching and balancing of shapes, colours and lines.

Misschien klinkt het raar, maar ik ben hier best trots op! Het was een enorm zoeken naar de juiste balans tussen de stofvormen, kleur en bijpassende quiltlijnen.

Some other news:

I still had not received my pincushion from the swap I organized with Hilde in Germany in March. But finally it arrived yesterday, after 5 weeks in the mail with the Easter chocolate bunny still inside! ;-) Thank you Michi for the lovely Lotus Pincushion!

Ik had nog steeds mijn pincushion niet ontvangen van de swap die ik samen met Hilde uit Duitsland in maart had georganiseerd. Gisteren kwam het pakje eindelijk aan! Het chocolade passhaasje zat er nog in! Dank je wel Michi voor deze prachtige Lotus Pincushion!

And last but not least, I joined a (Dutch) story contest about my favorite quilt, Gekko Quilt. You can vote for me at the website of the Quilterspalet, a shop in The Hague, Holland. En als laatste nog even dit: ik heb een verhaaltje ingestuurd voor een wedstrijd bij de Quilterspalet. Het gaat over mijn Gecko quilt. Als je het leuk vind kun je op mij stemmen!

Almost finished

Are you still working on that gecko quilt? Hmm, yes. Because the threads kept on shredding, breaking, knotting, etc I could not work on it for hours in a row. Until my dear friend Rose-Anne told me about a lecture by Cindy Needham. This lady knows all the inns and outs about machine quilting, thread tensions, needles and most of all: Problem Solving. The first change I made was the position of the thread delivery: from horizontal to vertical. What a difference this makes! Now it is a bit more fun to work on my quilt and there is only a small part left for the quilting. Before doing the final stitches I started to tie-off all the threads. This gave me some time to think about the final doodle lines to make this quilt complete! The quilt looks already much better. Next posting this one is finished! Sure it is!

Ben je nou nog niet klaar met die Gecko quilt? Duurt wel errug lang zeg! Hmm, ja, inderdaad. De draad ging steeds rafelen en brak af, knopen aan de onderkant. Kortom, ging pretje om voor uren aan te werken, vandaar. Totdat mijn lieve vriendin Rose-Anne me vertelde over een lezing die zij had gevolgd bij Cindy Needham. Deze dame weet alles over quilten met de machine: draadspanning, soorten garen, naalden en, heel erg prettig, hoe de Problemen op te lossen. Het eerste wat ik meteen deed was de positie van het garenklosje te veranderen van liggend naar staand. Wat een verschil zeg! Nu is het in ieder geval niet meer zo'n nachtmerrie om aan deze quilt te werken en ik ben bijna klaar.
Voordat ik de laatste quiltsteken maak, heb ik alvast de draadjes afgehecht. Nu ziet de quilt er al een stuk beter uit en heb ik kunnen nadenken over de laatste doodle lijnen De volgende keer istie af! Zeker weten!

Slowly making progress

Slowly more doodle lines are added to my Gecko quilt. I love to see how the soft shine of the quilting thread merges with the colours of the fabrics. But using this thread with the BSR is not always fun.... 

Langzaam aan komen er meer steekjes bij in lange fantasielijnen. Het is een mooi proces om te zien hoe de kleuren van dit zachte glanzende draad zich mengen met de kleuren van de stoffen. Maar wat een vervelende draad is het toch om met de BSR te gebruiken...

Boa Páscoa!

Wishing you all a Happy Easter from Brazil! I am enjoying some lovely lazy days, just doing a little bit of stitching besides moving around some last bits of the move, walking the dogs, baking an Easter bread and sipping wines in the afternoon.... In Brazil we can enjoy 4 days of Easter, starting on Thursday and Sunday being the last one. 

Vanuit Brazilie wens ik jou fijne Paasdagen! Ik geniet hier van een paar heerlijke luie dagen in en rond ons huisje, een beetje quilten, de laatste verhuisrommel opruimen, wandelen met de honden, paasbrood gebakken en s' middags een lekker wijntje. In Brazilië kunnen we genieten van 4 vrije dagen, beginnende op de donderdag en zondag is de laatste dag! Zalig!

Quilting this Gecko quilt is more of a challenge than I thought it would be. I just want to have the right density of doodling. Maybe I started to dense in the center, and going to the outside I don't want it to be so intensely stitched. Do I want to do circles all the way? It is a constant looking for and listening to my inner drive, gut feeling. It is like finding a new me and I love it!

Het is een veel grotere uitdaging dan ik verwacht had om deze Gecko quilt te quilten. Ik ben de hele tijd op zoek naar de juiste intensiteit van het 'doodlen'. Misschien ben ik iets te intens begonnen in het midden en nu wil ik dit naar de randen toe luchtiger maken. Moeten het overal cirkels worden? Het is een konstant zoeken luisteren naar mijn 'resonantie', mijn onderbuik gevoel. Heel spannend om dit proces te volgen en ik geniet ervan!

Doodling with the BSR

A few posts back I mentioned that I had some problems with the BSR of my Bernina. Oops, I should not have mentioned this because it was all my own misunderstanding of this wonderful stitch... Mr. Toledo of the Bernina shop here in town, came by and checked the machine: she is in excellent form, he told me! He showed me how to change from BSR1 to BSR2 and told me to change the bobbin tension... was I stupid!

Een tijdje geleden vertelde ik hier dat ik problemen had met de BSR van mijn Bernina. Nou ja, dat had ik dus beter niet kunnen doen want het was dus gewoon een simpele handeling die ik over het hoofd had gezien. Mr Toledo van de Bernina winkel in de stad kwam vorige week langs en legde me een paar dingen uit. Om van BSR1 naar BSR2 te veranderen druk je eenvoudig op de nummers op het 'stekendashboard'. Hij adviseerde mij ook om de bobbinspanning aan te passen. Ik voelde mij zo dom!

Maybe a bit difficult to see because I used white on white, but this a first doodling attempt with the BSR2. I also found many examples for free-motion quilting designs at Leah's flickr album. These pictures and with the quilts seen at last week's show in São Paulo, I knew what I wanted to do!

Misschien een beetje moeilijk om te zien omdat ik wit op wit heb gebruikt, maar dit is dus een eerste doodle (gedachteloos tekeningetjes maken) poging met de BSR2. Na het zien van de voorbeelden op Leah's flickr album en de quilts die ik vorige week in São Paulo zag, wist ik wat mij te doen stond!

En zo gaat het er een beetje uitzien, lekker veel gedoodle...

Talking laundry

Do you have the same funny habit? When I need to do something that I don't like doing or I am afraid it will turn out wrong, I tend to leave it and walk around it in circles.

This time around it is a quilt that hang on the wall for a couple of years while living in Vietnam. The wind of the air-conditioning blew along it all that time and the quilt looked really bad when I unpacked it a few weeks ago. Last week I put it in the living room, so I would not forget to wash it. As you can imagine, this past week went by and I walked around this quilt in the hope it would tell me it was okay to be washed. There are many red fabrics on it and many light coloured as well. What if it was going to bleed...  

"Just keep it moving and do not soak" I suddenly realized (or was it the quilt that spoke to me?)

The water did turn red, deep red. But the fabrics stayed fine and even became more bright! Phew, this is one of those few moments a machine like this comes in handy: as soon as I could see the water was getting too dark, I just turned the program to rinse and spinning.

Tadaa!

I am having fun adding details to the background. 

There is no written pattern, just following my gut feeling.

For the applique I am using a Sulky viscose thread from Gütermann,

and fabrics already used in the background.

Gecko on the wall...

 

My favorite quilt is back on the wall! Yesterday we drilled holes for most of our pictures and for this quilt as well. 

It shows lovely in our 'garden-room' where the wind now breezes through the open windows and the wind-chime tingles. 

The inspiration for this quilt comes from the few years we lived in Barcelona. Parc Quell is an inspiring place to visit when you ever have the chance!

If you look close, you can see I used blues for the sky, greens for the grass and insects for the bottom. The fabric used for the mosaic on the gecko, is hand dyed. With machine quilting I added a tongue, grass, leaves and more and smaller geckos.

The room is now a great spot to relax and savour caipirinhas at sundown. Cheers! Hilde
