Ethnic Kente from Ghana available in Holland

Ik was even MIA (missing in action) maar ik ben weer terug op Ghanese grond! 

Naast al die kleurrijke Afrikaanse prints wordt er hier in Ghana ook prachtige etnische stof geweven: Kente stof. Ik heb er al eerder over geschreven: hier en hier. Kente is een smal geweven stof van ongeveer 8 tot 10 cm breed, die vervolgens aan elkaar wordt genaaid tot een (vrouwen-) doek.

Het garen is een mix van katoen en zijde en komt in de mooiste kleuren. Hoe beter de wever hoe mooier de symbolen die erin verwerkt worden.

Hey there! I was MIA for a little while, but I am back on Ghana soil. 

Besides the colourful African prints fabrics in Ghana there is also the beautiful woven ethnic Kente cloth. I wrote about the ethnic Kente cloth before: here and here. Kente is woven in long strips of about 3" to 4" wide and sewn together to make a (lady's-) cloth. The yarn is a often a mixture of cotton and silk and comes in the most beautiful strong colours. The more experienced the weaver is the nicer the symbols become that are woven into the cloth.

Via Instagram ben ik in contact gekomen met Juul van Big Dread Kente. Haar partner Gideon is 'master Weaver' in Ghana en produceert prachtige Kentedoeken. Toen ik een paar weken geleden in De Haag was ging ik bij haar langs. Onder het genot van een koffie en een Hollandse gevulde koek kwam er een hele stapen Kentedoeken op tafel, de ene nog mooier dan de ander. Een van deze doeken heb ik toen gekocht en weer mee naar Ghana genomen.

When I was in Holland a couple of weeks ago, I met Juul, a Dutch lady whose partner Gideon is a 'master Kente weaver' in Ghana. He produces the nicest Kente cloth. With a cup of coffee and Dutch treats more and more Kente cloth came onto the table, every single one was just as awesome. I decided to buy one of the cloths and took it back with me to Ghana.

Eenmaal weer in Ghana heb ik er een applique op gemaakt van het Ghanese symbool Sankofa.

Sankofa is een van de vele Adinkra symbolen die je veel in het dagelijkse leven in Ghana tegenkomt.

Zowel de vorm als de betekenis van Sankofa staan mij wel aan: 'het is niet erg om naar het verleden terug te gaan en te halen wat je vergeten bent'. Oftewel: leer van het verleden en ga voorwaarts.

So last week I added an applique of a Sankofa bird to the cloth. Sankofa is one of the many different Adinkra symbols that play a significant role in Ghanaian society. The shape as well as the meaning of Sankofa appeal to me: "it's not bad to fetch what is at risk of being left behind'. Or in other words: learn from the past while moving forward.

Door het aanbrengen van deze zwarte applique op het Kentedoek, vindt ik de kleuren nog mooier uitkomen. De bovenrand heb ik met een biesje aan de achterkant vastgezet en een tunnel om het op te hangen, net als bij een quilt.

By adding the bird in black fabric to the Kente cloth I think the colours of the cloth became stronger. Maybe it is also a matter of 'adding value'? 
At the back I stitched a strip of normal fabric to the top to bind it off and added a tunnel for the rod to hang it up, just like with a normal quilt.

Pan African Friendship Quilt Challenge Show 2016!

In maart schreef ik al over de Pan African Friendship Quilt Challenge 2015-2016 die door het quiltersgilde in Kaapstad, Zuid Afrika, werd georganiseerd. Ik werd gevraagd of ik hier aan mee wilde doen vanuit Ghana. De deadline voor deze challenge was afgelopen september en de tentoonstelling was afgelopen maand. Helaas kon ik er zelf niet naar toe, maar 2 vriendinnen wel en dankzij hun foto's kon ik toch een beetje meegenieten van deze quilt show.

In March I told you a little bit about the Pan African Friendshio Quilt Challenge 2015-2016 organised by the quilters guild in Cape Town, South Africa. I was asked if I wanted to join and ofcourse I did! The deadline for this challenge was last September and the show was held in Cape Town last month. Unfortunately I wasn't able to go there but two friends were and thanks to them I have these pictures to share.

Iedereen die meedeed kreeg dezelfde zes stofjes toegestuurd en daarmee moest een blok gemaakt worden. Je hoefde ze niet alle 6 te gebruiken en eventueel kon je er een andere stof aan toevoegen.

Dit blok stuurde je op naar je 'Twin sister' ergens in Afrika die je werd toegewezen door de organisatie. Zij voegde er een rand aan toe en stuurde het dan weer naar je terug. Zo kreeg ik dus het center blok van mijn 'Twin sister' uit Kaapstad en heb daar een rand om heen gemaakt.

Daarna weer terug gestuurd en op tijd je eigen quilt afmaken voor de tentoonstelling in Kaapstad.

All participants received the same set of 6 fabrics. With some, or all, you had to make a center block. You were allowed to add a few more fabrics. This block you had to send to your 'Twin sister' somewhere in Africa. She added a border and mailed it back to sender.

After this we had to finish our quilts and mail it in time to Cape Town for the quilt show.

Pan African Quilt Challenge 2016 up-date

Het is mij eindelijk gelukt om een border rond het mooie middenblok van mijn quilt Twin sister Sue uit Zuid Afrika te maken! Het was een enorm gepuzzel om deze border niet te veel te laten overheersen 

I finally managed to create an appropriate border to the beautiful block my quilting Twin sister from South Africa made. It was a huge challenge for me to come up with something that wasn't too strong

Gelukkig had Sue wat extra biaislint erbij gedaan en ben ik daar eerst mee aan de slag gegaan.

Eigenlijk wilde ik wat van de Afrikaanse prints gebruiken die ik voor mijn middenblok gebruikt heb, zie HIER, maar dat paste er helemaal niet bij. Toen werd het wel wat moeilijker omdat ik hier in Ghana helemaal geen 'gewone' stofjes heb liggen en ik het dus moest doen met wat Sue mij samen met haar blok had opgestuurd.

I was happy Sue sent me some left over bias tape as well and I started with adding that around her work first. My first plan was to add some African prints to the border that I had used for my center piece, see HERE, but that didn't fit in at all, those colours were too strong. Then it became a bit difficult as I don't have any 'normal' prints here with me in Ghana, so I had to use the fabrics Sue sent me along with her center piece.

Hehe, eindelijk is het klaar. Dit kan ik opsturen naar Sue zodat zij haar quilt zelf verder kan afmaken.

Mijn middenblok met haar toevoeging heb ik nog niet ontvangen! Spannend hoor!

Pfff, I finally have a good feeling about this border. More than this I cannot do as there is no more fabric left. I still haven't received her addition to my center piece!

Pan African Friendship Quilt Challenge 2015 - 2016

GHQG = Good Hope Quilters Guild

Oef, een hele mond vol is deze titel van de challenge waar ik mij voor heb laten strikken.

Via een quiltvriendin, die ik in Singapore heb leren kennen en die nu weer in haar thuisland Zuid-Afrika woont, ben ik gevraagd of ik vanuit Ghana hieraan mee wilde doen.

Natuurlijk, elke quilt-uitdaging is leuk en duwt je uit je eigen comfortzone.

I have been asked to join this quilt challenge organised by the Good Hope Quilters Guild from South Africa. As with almost every challenge, you are kindly pushed outside your comfort zone, so I said 'yes!'
For this challenge I have been connected with a quilting 'Twin Sister' near Cape Town. Her name is Sue Prins and she is an experienced quilter as I found out after Googling her name. Knowing this makes me a bit nervous...  

Voor deze challenge werd ik gekoppeld aan een quiltster uit Zuid Afrika, mijn zogenaamde Twin Sister. Na even de naam 'Sue Prins' opgezocht te hebben op internet bleek zij een ervaren quiltster te zijn, dus dat maakte mij wel enigszins zenuwachtig!

Deze stofjes kreeg ik van het quiltersgilde uit Kaapstad toegestuurd en meteen wist ik dat de uitdaging groot was, want sommige van deze kleuren zijn niet echt mijn ding...

At the time of taking a picture it was still hiding inside the envelop...

Het is dus de bedoeling dat we minstens 2 van de opgestuurde stofjes gebruiken en die eventueel met 3 tot 5 eigen stofjes aanvullen. Het eerste deel van de quilt mag niet kleiner zijn dan 30 cm vierkant en niet groter dan 60 cm vierkant.

Als het eerste deel klaar is, stuur je het op naar de 'Twin Sister' en zij maakt er dan een rand omheen. Als deze rand klaar is, krijg je het weer teruggestuurd.

Er is een schriftje/dagboekje bij gevoegd waarin je iets over je eigen quiltje en eventuele voorkeuren kunt opschrijven.

We are supposed to use at least 2 of these fabrics and are allowed to add a few more from our own stash. The size of the first part we make should not be smaller than 12" and not bigger than 24".
When you finish your first part, you have to send it to your Twin Sister and she will add a border to it. When this border is completed she will return the quilt to you and you have to finish it. A small diary is added to communicate with each other.

Bij de stofjes voor deze Afrikaanse challenge miste ik een Afrikaanse invloed en omdat we er ook eigen stofjes aan toe mogen voegen, heb ik er natuurlijk een paar batiks erbij gedaan!

Being it an African challenge I have added a bit of an African flavour to it.

Omdat ik niet erg weg was van de blauwe stofjes, maar toch alle lapjes wilde gebruiken heb ik gezorgd dat de oranje en groene kleuren gingen domineren. De smalle oranje baan springt eruit en het paarse versterkt de groene kleur

The challenge for me was to use all the fabrics, even the ones I did not like.

Dit is mijn bijdrage geworden aan de challenge en ik ben er best blij mee. Ik heb het opgestuurd naar Kaapstad en ben heel benieuwd naar de border die mijn Twin Sister er omheen gaat maken.

Haar specialiteit is Keltische knopen en laat ik dat nou heel erg leuk vinden!

This is what I made as my first part of the quilt. I posted it to my Twin Sister and look forward to what she will add as a border. Her speciality is Celtic knots and I do like those.

Er zit ook wel iets van het ster-element van mijn quiltje in.

This is done so nicely! I can only hope I am not going to mess it up!

In het boekje schreef ze dat groen niet haar kleur is, dus dat zal ik er niet aan toevoegen.

Ze heeft er wat van haar zelfgemaakte biaislint in de envelop bijgestopt, een stille hint! ;)

In her diary she explained she doesn't like green. She added the leftover bias tape she used for her part, that is something I could use... She also showed how she designs her Celtic knots.

Ik heb tot eind mei de tijd om hier iets moois van te maken en dan stuur ik het weer naar haar terug.

Dan hoop ik mijn quiltje weer terug te hebben en maak ik het verder af door het te quilten en er een binding omheen te doen.

 I have until the end of May to finish the border to her quilt and send it back to her. By that time I hope to see what she has done with the border to my quilt.
Then I have to finish the quilt, put a sleeve to the back and send it to the Good Hope Quilters Guild in South Africa where it will be showcased next to my Twin Sister's quilt at the Fynbos exhibition in October this year!

En als het nu allemaal klaar is? Dan stuur ik mijn quiltje weer op naar de quilters gilde Good Hope Quilters Guild in Zuid Afrika en komt het naast het quiltje van mijn Twin Sister te hangen op de Fynbos tentoonstelling in oktober van dit jaar. Heel spannend!

Mmm, misschien zit daar een leuk reisje aan te komen... ;)

Accra Quilting Group

Samen met Jacqueline Roos, een Nederlandse quiltster die ook in Accra woont, ben ik een quiltgroep begonnen en van de week kwamen we voor het eerst bij elkaar.

Met 2 andere vrouwen, uit Zuid Afrika afkomstig, hadden we een hele gezellige ochtend waar we zelfs nog een aantal steekjes hebben gezet!

Jacqueline liet een paar van haar prachtige quilts zien...

Together with Jacqueline Roos, a Dutch quiltster who also lives in Accra, I have started a quilt group

and last week we came together for the very first time.

With 2 other ladies, both from South Africa, we had a fun and inspirational morning! There were even a few stitches made!

Volgende week komen we weer samen en hopelijk sluiten er zich dan meer quilters aan!

Next week we will come together again and hopefully more quilters will join us!

In the waiting room

Mijn vertrek naar Ghana is met een paar weken uitgesteld

De papierwinkel om een verblijfsvisum aan te vragen gaat erg langzaam

en ik wil mijn zoon in NYC nog even zien voordat ik vertrek! Het is alweer 9 maanden geleden dat ik hem voor het laatst zag. Aangezien hij nu te druk is, moet ik nog even wachten....

Dat geeft mij wat extra tijd om met de hand deze 'Pies and Tarts' quilt te pitten

My departure to Ghana is postponed for a couple of weeks

 all administration to get a permission to live there takes a bit longer than expacted

I also want to see my son in NYC before I leave, it's been 9 months now since I last saw him!

But he is too busy at the moment, so I need to wait a bit more...

This gives me more time to quilt this 'Pies and Tarts' quilt

Met Perle katoen in verschillende kleuren groen, blauw en paars,

ga ik langs alle cirkels, eerst de grote Pies en later rond de kleine Tarts

With Perle cotton in different colours of blue, green and purple

I go along all the circles, first the big Pies and later on around the smaller Tarts

Sweet Cherry Chirps

 Ze zijn klaar! Twee quiltjes, 30x30cm, gespannen op schildersdoek,

besteld door een oud klasgenootje van de basisschool!

They are finished! Two small quilts, measuring 12" square, stretched on canvas,

custom order by an old classmate from elementary school!

Ze wilde 2 quiltjes met 3 vogeltjes op elk die naar elkaar kijken, twieten, gluren, etc

She loved to have 2 quilts with 3 little birds on each facing each other

Machine gepieced en met verschillende kleuren garen accenten aangebracht, 

en met een smal lintje kleine knoopjes geborduurd

Alleen aan de voorkant zit batting, aan de zijkanten en achterkant niet, 

hierdoor kun je het quiltje makkelijker, en mooier, om het frame spannen

Machine pieced, with different colours thread I added some more depth 

and with a small ribbon I embroidered small knots

Only the front has batting, to the sides and back there is none.

This makes it easier, and nicer, to stretch the fabric around the frame

De stof is op de hoeken aan de boven en onderkant

 op dezelfde wijze omgevouwen en vastgeniet 

The fabric is folded into one direction at both corners at the top and at the bottom

Op de achterkant een label geplakt met behulp van Vliesofix

At the back I fixed a label with fusible web

Goed ingepakt in bubbelplastic vliegen de Cherry Chirps nu naar de Canarische eilanden 

waar mijn vriendin van vroeger nu woont: een prachtige nieuwe bestemming!

Packed safely in bubble wrap the Cherry Chirps are flying to the Canary Island 

where my childhood friend lives now: a real nice new destination!

Transition time

Over een paar dagen vlieg ik weer naar Nederland

De laatste paar dagen worden besteed aan opruimen en een voorraad eten koken voor P.

Af en toe voeg ik iets toe aan mijn 'Andino' quilts, maar ze zijn nog niet klaar

Dus gaan ze weer mee in de koffer de oceaan over

In a few days I will fly back to Holland

It is clean up time again and run some last errands before I check in

Every now and then I add something to my 'Andino' quilts, they are not finished yet

They will cross the ocean with me in my suitcase

Dat ene zen-gevoel van 'nu is het goed' mis ik nog

Ik ben er wel zeker van dat dit project uit twee delen bestaat

geïnspireerd op de natuur in de Andes gebergte

I still don't have that Zen feeling, that feeling of 'this is good' 

I do know that this project consists of two parts

inspired by the nature of the Andes Mountains

Als je een project maakt zonder patroon weet je eigenlijk nooit van te voren

waar je eindigt en hoe het proces zal verlopen, ik in ieder geval niet ;)

 De ene quilt is wat korter dan de ander en ik speel nog met het toevoegen van vormen

If you make a project without a pattern you never know exactly where you will end,

at least I don't ;)

One quilt is a little shorter and I will add some extra's to the bottom

Ik speel ook met de gedachte om kralen toevoegen, maar die liggen in Nederland

Nu eerst de koffers pakken! Het is weer tijd voor verandering van plek!

I plan on adding beads as well, but they are in my stash in Holland

Time to pack my suitcases! Time to change places!
