Zangbeto dance performance in Benin

Op onze laatste dag werden we uitgenodigd om de dans van de Zangbeto, de nachtwakers, van de Yoruba stam bij te wonen. Dit is een oude traditionele dans waarbij hooibalen in de rondte draaien op opzwepende muziek. Het is afkomstig uit het Voodoo geloof en door middel van dansen, zingen en het bespelen van muziekinstrumenten lieten ze ons zien dat ze blij zijn in de Voodoo cultuur.

On our last day of our trip to Benin we were invited to watch the dance of the Zangbeto, the nightwatchmen, of the Yoruba people. This is a traditional dance of haystacks swirling around on the ritme of stimulating music. It is part of the Voodoo religion and by means of dance, singing and making music they showed us how happy they are with their Voodoo culture.

Het zijn een paar hele intense dagen geweest in Benin. Vol met nieuwe indrukken zijn we weer naar huis gegaan. Terug naar het 'gewone' leven.

It has been an intens couple of days with many new impressions of West Africa.

Time to go home and back to 'normal' life.

Handmade pottery from Se, Benin

In het dorpje Se bezochten we de pottenbakster Marceline

die een bedrijf runt waar vrouwen werkzaam zijn in een grote pottenbakkerij.

De potten worden hier niet met een draaischijf gemaakt, maar men draait er zelf om de pot heen

Instead of using a turning wheel, the ladies walk around the pots themselves

Marceline laat ons ook zien hoe ze in 10 min een spaarpot maakt in de vorm van een duif

Marceline also showed us how she makes a piggy bank in the shape of a dove within 10 min!

Stilt village Ganvie in Benin

De volgende stop was Ganvie, een stadje op palen midden in het Nokoue meer. In 1700-1800 is deze stad in het midden van het meer gebouwd om aan de slavenhandel te ontkomen. Nu wonen er zo'n 20.000 mensen. Vishandel is hun voornaamste bron van inkomsten.

In 1996 is het op de Werelderfgoedlijst geplaatst.

The next stop was Ganvie, a stilt village in Lake Nokoue, built in the years 1700-1800 to escape the slave trade. Nowadays there live about 20.000 people in the village. Their main indusrty is fishing and fish farming.

In 1996 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
