My final days in Accra

En dan is het dan eindelijk zo ver: mijn laatste week in Accra - Ghana is aangebroken.

Met gemengde gevoelens ga ik voor de allerlaatste keer naar de Makola markt waar talloze stalletjes en winkeltjes tot de nok toe zijn gevuld met stoffen, zowel lokaal geproduceerd als Chinese namaak. Gelukkig weet ik na 3 jaar waar ik goed kan slagen.

At last my final days in Accra - Ghana are there. 

Filled with mixed emotions I went for one more time to the Makola market to buy just a little bit more fabric. So many stalls and little shops are filled from floor to ceiling with local and foreign (China counterfeit) fabrics. Fortunately, after 3 years, I know where to go for my fabric stash.

Nog een keertje ga ik langs bij de sjieke Vlisco winkel in Accra Mall waar het prima is uit te houden in de heerlijke gekoelde lucht. Heel wat anders dan op de markt! De prijzen liggen natuurlijk een stuk hoger met deze in Nederland geproduceerde stoffen!

One more visit to the Vlisco fabric store at the Accra Mall can not be skipped! In this air-conditioned shop you can only find fabrics produced in the Netherlands for the West-African market. Prices are significant higher, and so is the quality!

In de afgelopen maanden heb ik mijn kennis van het dozen maken mogen delen met een paar jongens van een klein bedrijfje in Accra. Ook van hun moet ik helaas afscheid nemen. Maar ik weet zeker dat ze met hun nieuwe vaardigheid vele mooie doosjes zullen gaan verkopen.

In the past few months I had the pleasure of sharing my box making skills with a few boys from a small company in Accra. Unfortunately I had to say goodbye to them as well. But I am pretty sure they will be able to use their new skills and make beautiful boxes for the local market.

Voor twee lieve vriendinnen heb ik op de valreep deze 2 mandjes gemaakt met repen stof en katoen touw. Een heel leuk werkje waar ik over een tijdje nog eens mee door wil gaan.

For two dear friends I made 2 baskets from strips of fabric and cotton rope. So much fun to do, I definitely will do again in the near future. 

En dan is het koffers pakken geblazen! Omdat ik niet weet hoe lang het zal duren voordat de spullen met de verhuizer komen neem ik zoveel mogelijk stof zelf mee... 

Finally the moment is there to pack my suitcases.Because I have no idea how long our shipment of personal effects will take I try to take as much fabric as possible with me on the plane...

Buying African fabrics at Makola Market in Accra

Vandaag neem ik jullie mee naar een van de beste stoffenwinkels op Makola markt in Accra: Pakbess. Hier kun je de nieuwste designs van de Vlisco/GTP stoffen kopen. (GTP is de Ghanese Textiel Print fabriek van Vlisco.) Buiten op straat worden ook veel stoffen verkocht maar dat zijn voornamelijk kopieën uit China. Het maken van foto's op de markt is niet zo leuk omdat de mensen dan behoorlijk boos kunnen worden. Dus daarom alleen deze foto's van Pakbess' stoffenwinkel.

Today I take you with me to one of the best fabric shops at Makola Market in Accra: Pakbess. Here you will find the latest designs of Vlisco/GTP fabrics. (GTP is the Ghana Textile Printing factory of Vlisco) Outside on the street you will find many other prints but they are almost all copies from China. Taking pictures on the street is not fun at all as most people can get angry when doing so. That's why I show you only the pictures I took at Pakbess' fabric shop.

En dit zijn mijn nieuwe aanwinsten! Het is elke keer weer moeilijk om een keuze te maken.

Sommige lappen zijn 4 yards (3.60 meter) en enkele zijn 6 yards (5.50 meter) lang. Kortere lappen worden niet verkocht ;)

These are my new additions to my African fabric stash! It is always hard to make a selection.

Some of these are 4 yards long and others 6 yards. They won't cut smaller pieces from this quality fabric ;)

Makola Market in Accra

Druk, warm, stoffig, lawaai, zweten en kleur!

Dat is wat bij mij opkomt zodra ik uit de auto stap

Crowded, warm, dusty, noise, sweat and colour!

That's what comes to my mind when I get out of the car

 

De markt bevindt zich in een oud gedeelte van de stad en allerlei waren worden verkocht zowel op straat als in de gebouwen en de steegjes er tussenin.

The market is located in an old part of the town and stalls are everywhere on the side walks, inside buildings as well as in the alleys in between them

Als het je lukt om goed te verkopen, dan hoef je niet meer op straat in de blakende zon te staan

maar kun je een ruimte claimen in een steegje zoals deze dames die elk hun eigen stofhandeltje hebben

If you can manage to work your way up, you don't need to sell any more in the blazing heat but you can claim a spot in of the small alleys, like these six ladies each having their own fabric shop

Of nog beter zoals in dit winkeltje met air-co vol met rollen stof van Vlisco uit Helmond! 

Or even better like this air-conditioned shop with imported Vlisco's from Holland!!! 

Er is een heel groot verschil in kwaliteit bij al deze Afrikaanse stoffen, vele worden in China gedrukt en vormen een grote bedreiging voor de lokaal gedrukte stoffen. Veel banen in de wax print fabrieken in Ghana dreigen te verdwijnen als de Chinese stoffen meer terrein winnen. 

Daarnaast heb je verschillende Ghanese fabrieken die meer of mindere kwaliteit maken, zowel met de stof zelf als met de verfstoffen die gebruikt worden. Vlisco staat bovenaan in kwaliteit en gaat wel '1000 jaar' mee, en is daarmee dus ook het duurste. Vlisco heeft hier in Accra ook een fabriek staan waar de GTP (Ghanaian Textile Prints) stof gedrukt wordt, en deze stof is iets minder soepel, maar nog steeds van hele goede kwaliteit en leuke designs. Daarna komen High Target en Akosombo. Mensen die het zich kunnen veroorloven kopen Vlisco.

There is a big difference in the quality of the African fabrics, more and more are printed in China and are pushing the local fabrics from the market. Many jobs in the Ghanaian fabric industry are in danger. The local printed fabrics differ in quality in the fabrics used and in the paint for the designs. Vlisco from Holland is the best quality you can get but is very expensive compared to the locally made fabrics. Vlisco runs a textile print factory in Accra named GTP with great designs and good quality although the cotton can be a bit thicker. Next on the scale is High Target and Akosombo but someone told me that High Target is also printed in China..

Leuk weetje: 

verse bloemen zijn hier nauwelijks te koop, dus nemen de mannen daarvoor in de plaats voor hun vrouw -of vriendin- een lapje stof van 6 yards mee naar huis! Zij kan er dan een mooie jurk van laten maken. Daarvoor hoeven ze niet eens naar de markt maar kunnen het gewoon op straat kopen! ;)

Did you know that:

it is not so easy to buy flowers in Accra and men buy their wife -or mistress- a piece of fabric (6 yards) in stead so the lady can have a dress made out of it!

The men don't need to go to the market to buy but can stop along the road and buy from the street vendor

New York City trip

Hoog tijd om na een paar bewogen maanden

de zaken van de afgelopen tijd weer eens op een rijtje te zetten.

Een van de leukste dingen die ik heb gedaan is logeren

bij mijn zoon in NYC! Ik had hem alweer 10 maanden niet gezien!

lately I have been very busy with other things...

And one of the things I did was flying to my son in NYC!

I hadn't seen him for about 10 months!

we cycled around on the bike paths that are every where around

 

 Een hele dag samen met zoon en schoondochter over de 

vele fietspaden getourd, en allerlei leuke dingen gezien.

is een geweldig mooi aangelegd stukje natuur met 

een prachtig uitzicht op Manhattan.

En toen was het weer tijd om naar huis te gaan.

Het was een kort maar krachtig bezoek aan deze heerlijke stad!

Gelukkig zie ik mijn zoon weer met de kerst!

Time to go back home

It was a short but great visit!

Thank goodness I will see my son again for Christmas!

Quilting in Santiago Chile

Toen ik vorig jaar in september voor het eerst in Chili aankwam

ging ik op internet op zoek naar een quiltgroep in Santiago

Via een internationale vrouwenvereniging had ik al snel beet

helaas is deze groep niet erg actief maar kwam ik na een paar maanden 

wel iemand tegen die die net zo gek is als ik

When I first arrived in Chile, September last year,
I started searching the internet for a quilt group in Santiago
through the International Women's group I quickly found one
and at one of their meetings I got to know someone as crazy as I am

Geen tijd te verliezen en meteen aan de slag!
No time to waste so we went straight into action

Het is een kleine winkel met een beperkte collectie van mooie stoffen en, 

gelukkig voor mij, vooral veel batiks van Hoffman

It is a small shop with a small but nice collection, and, lucky me,

 a wider collection of Hoffman's batiks

Met mijn simpele naaimachine op een klein tafeltje in haar naaikamer ben ik helemaal gelukkig

 ik mag ook alles uit haar kast en lades gebruiken! Zo fijn, want al mijn spullen zijn in Nederland...

With my simple sewing machine on a small side table in her sewing room I am perfectly happy!
She lets me use all her supplies which is great as all my stuff is in Holland...

Voor dit nieuwe project heb ik golvende banen in kleurverloop aan elkaar gestikt
Daarna geverfd hennepgaren erop gestikt
en cirkels van papier erop geplaatst om te kijken hoe te spelen met de nieuw gecreëerde stof

For this new project I sewed curved strips of fabric in colour gradient together
Then added coloured hemp yarn to embellish the top
and placed paper circles to see how I could play with the new created fabric
