Charm Packs with 42 different African prints!

It's about time to start cutting into my African fabric stash to make Charm Packs!
I love Charm Packs because they are a fast and fun way to make an effective quilt. Especially with the abundance of colours in the African prints these fabrics will make everybody happy.
One charm pack is a bundle of 42 pieces of 5" squares of pre-cut fabric.

42 different prints in one Charm Pack

Most African prints are sold by the yard or even by 6 yards! When I bought my fabrics in Accra - Ghana I often came home with 6 yards of one print. If I was lucky they cut off 2 yards of one print. So the best thing was to go with some friends and split the 6 yards between us. There were always so many beautiful prints available at the markets that we often came home carrying heavy bags full with fabrics! So it's about time to cut them up and share with whoever is interested.

A stack of pre-cut Charm Packs

Things you can do with a Charm Pack

With the Holiday season ahead of us and to keep ourselves sane during these insecure times it's just fun to make small presents for our loved ones like coasters, placemats, a baby quilt, a tote bag, etc. For a baby quilt for instance, you need 2 charm packs. By using a charm pack as a beginner quilter you can grow your skills by making small projects.

Now available!

These Charm Packs are now available through my Etsy shop or by contacting me by email, see contact form at the top right. I also sell African FQs too. If you are interested just send me a note and I will get back to you!

Back in Holland and boxes on the shelves!

I am back in Holland for a few weeks and I am loving it! It's great to be able to go outside and breath fresh air, enjoy the well stocked grocery stores, biking and more. I actually never talk about it but Accra isn't the nicest place to live. There is not so much to do and only the African fabrics keep me sane. The positive effect of this situation is that I don't have much social commitments and I can spend all my time on designing quilts and making boxes. I am able to develop my own style and I am very happy about that. Hence my productivity! ;)

A few of my boxes and quilts I brought with me to Holland to sell them trough my Etsy shop.
It's simply easier to do so from there.

Quilts and colour therapy

Om een leuke gevarieerde quilt te maken heb je veel verschillende stoffen nodig;
hoe meer hoe beter!

To make a quilt with a variety in colours you need many different fabrics; the more the merrier!

Machine quilting my friends quilt

One of my Dutch friends, who I got to know in Saigon - Vietnam and now lives in San Francisco, asked if I could make her a quilt with African fabrics. It will bring back fond memories of trip she once made to Ghana. If you start cutting strips of 4.5" of many different fabrics you end up having enough for a set of quilts! And because there isn't so much else to do here in Accra, it is better to spend all your time behind the sewing machine!

The next pictures show the influence of colours on its surroundings. The solid colours in the sashing all have their own impact on the painting on the wall behind the sofa. The painting is from Nicholas Kowalski, a painter from Accra.

Last but not least...

Just before the year draws to a close I show you the projects I finished in the past few weeks

African Kaleidoscope # 6 - "Star Fruit" (46x46cm)

This little one is finished and will stay behind in Holland to be shown at the Miniature exhibition of the Quilters Guild in March. I pieced it by machine and quilted it by hand.

Baby quilt (90x120cm)

On the brink of New Year's eve my niece delivered a baby boy and I made her a quilt while enjoying the good life in Holland. Just hopped on the bike to go to the quilt shop some quilting thread and ordered things online...Like the fabric with 'The wolf and seven little goats' which I ordered HERE.

This project I can't show you yet... ;)

Last but not least:
2016 has been a very colourful year...
Thanks for all your wonderful likes and comments!

Quilt made out of baby and toddler clothes

De quilt is af en geleverd!
The quilt is finished and delivered!

In my last blog-post I showed you the 9 different sets of quilted blocks
There are many different fabrics used in this quilt and the stretchy ones I enforced with H200 vlieseline before using it. I made 3 rows of 3 blocks and these rows I sew together to make the quilt. Because of the weight of the quilt, the dining table came in handy!

To keep the quilt supple my friend from  Dutch Comfort advised me to first stitch the top layer together and to stitch the backing separately by hand . For this last one the ironing board came in handy

Besides quilting by machine I used the buttons from the clothes to 'quilt' some knitted parts of the quilt

I used the same fabric from the back for the binding and
a pretty collar to embellish my 'signature' on the back

The proud and happy owners of this special quilt!

With this quilt they will enjoy all the cherished memories that come with these clothes of their 4 children; like the bedsheets from their baby-daughter who died too soon, the dress she wore, the cute ballet outfit from their now teenage daughter, the Ajax soccer short from their son, a t-shirt from the time they lived in Brazil, all outgrown by now
I tried to capture those memories in using that specific part of every item in this quilt and by doing so, creating this quilt became very special to me.

PS: in the meantime I arrived safe and sound in Ghana and have many impressions already to share with you!

Stay Tuned!

Over 5 dagen vertrek ik naar Ghana

A Very Special Baby Quilt

The floor in my living room is covered with 81 blocks (10.5'')
made out of a stack of baby and toddler clothes
I am glad there is no one else walking around here!

One of my friends asked me if I could make her a quilt made out of the clothes from her 4 kids who are teenagers by now, except for one, who died when she was only 1½ years old
The clothes and sleeping bag of this baby girl I put on a separate pile

It is a challenge and not always easy to cut out pieces from the pretty clothes
but she insisted on going ahead, because she was sure about what she wanted:
a quilt made out of her children's clothes for her bed
to cuddle underneath with her husband

Here a preview of some of the prepared blocks

Nu even doorwerken want ik wil hem afhebben voordat ik vertrek!
I better continue because I want to finish this quilt before I leave!

Tweet tweet

It's been a while since I have been here, so it' time to tweet a bit!
The Holidays have been great with having the family together and it has been hard since all of them have flown back to their own nests in London, NYC and Santiago, Chile. The best medicine for me to fill up my empty nest feeling is taking out my sewing machine and clutter the dining table with fabric and notions I think I need and leave it there day and night!

This block is my contribution for a baby quilt the 'São Paulo Stitchers' sewing group will give to one of its members. The theme is birds and trees and the small block with the leave will go into the border. Right now it is on its way to Brazil

I liked this theme so much I made another one on a different background. This is a sneak preview form 'Cherry Chirps'
Cherry Chirps is made with machine appliqué, machine quilted and ribbon embroidery

In one weeks time I will fly to Santiago and there is still a lot that needs to be done before I check in for this flight of almost 18 hours...
