Sunburst Quilt in full size!

 Op de laatste Patchwork en Quiltdagen 2019 in Rijswijk was deze quilt ook te bewonderen.

De afmeting is 2,30 x 2,30 meter.

This quilt was also displayed at the latest Patchwork and Quilt days in Rijswijk (NL).

It measures 90" x 90"

Toen deze quilt eenmaal naast de andere quilts hing kreeg ik pas door hoe groot hij eigenlijk is.

When the quilt was finally hanging in between the others, I only realised the size of it.

With Maggie and Iris

Twee vriendinnen kwamen over uit het buitenland om mij en mijn Afrikaanse quilts te zien! We kennen elkaar uit de tijd dat we alle drie in Singapore woonden en lid waren van de lokale quiltgroep.

Two dear friends from my time in Singapore came by to see me and my African quilts.

We know each other from the time we all lived in Singapore and were members of the local quilting group.

Deze quilt kwam een jaar geleden tot stand en begon met een paar hoopjes van stofresten...

This quilt came about almost one year ago and started with e few heaps of scraps...

Met de 15-minuten-spelen technique kwamen de Afrikaanse diamanten tevoorschijn...

With the 15-minutes-of-play the African diamonds came alive...

Mijn ontwerpmuur was al snel te klein...

My design wall became too small pretty soon...

Toen de top eenmaal klaar was en nog niet gequilt ...

Hello Sunburst Quilt!

De top van mijn Sunburst Quilt is klaar!

My Sunburst Quilt top is ready!

Deze top gaat mee in de koffer als ik de volgende keer weer naar Nederland ga.

Daar kan ik het laten dubbelen, iets wat ik absoluut niet zelf kan doen vanwege de grote maat: 2.30 meter in het vierkant.

This one will come with me next time I go back home, to Holland.

I have to commercially sandwich it as it is quite big: 90" square. Besides that, a proper batting is not available in Ghana.

De achtergrond stof is gedrukt door de lokale Vlisco fabriek in Ghana, GTP, en is een traditionele print van donker blauw op bijna wit. De naam van de stof is Safoa. Ik vond deze stof het beste passen bij al die felgekleurde stofjes. Het is een waar Afrikaans feestje geworden!

The fabric for the background is locally made by the Vlisco factory called GTP. The traditional dark blue print on almost white fabric is called Safoa and picks up the bright African colours best. It's a real African vibe quilt!

African Diamonds Fabric Fun

De grote bloem van Afrikaanse stofrestjes wordt langzaam groter.

Of zal ik het de Afrikaanse Zonnestralen noemen, of misschien een Afrikaanse Supernova?!

The big flower of African fabric scraps is slowly growing. 

Or should I call it an African sunburst? Or maybe an African supernova!

De diamantvormige acrylic template is van Victoria Findlay Wolfe Quilts

Met haar methode van 15 minutes of play ben ik uren zoet achter de naaimachine. Grappig genoeg duurt elke diamant ongeveer 15 minuten om te maken.

With her technique of 15 minutes of play I can go on for hours behind the sewing machine. Funny enough it takes me about 15 minutes to make one diamond shape.

Hieronder kun je zien hoe ik de diamanten aan elkaar zet:

1. Linksboven: alle diamanten in de juiste volgorde 

2. Rechtsboven: in rijen aan elkaar genaaid

3. Rechtsonder: 2 taartpunten gemaakt door een groep van rijen aan elkaar te naaien

4. Linksonder: een kwart van het hele patroon zit aan elkaar

In the picture below you can see the different steps I take to put all the diamonds together:

1. Upper left: the diamonds are in the correct order

2. Upper right: the rows are sewn

3. Lower right: 2 pie shapes are made out of a group of rows

4. Lower left: a quarter of the pattern in sewn together 

De volgende stap is het bevestigen van de achtergrond aan deze bloem/zonnestralen/supernova ontwerp! Voorlopig ben ik er nog even zoet mee!

The next step is sewing the background to the big flower/sunburst/supernova design!

This will keep me of the streets for some more time!

Having fun with scraps of African fabric

In het afgelopen paar jaar heb ik best veel restjes stof verzameld bij het maken van quilts en dozen. Als een van de cursisten van de workshops Dozen Maken een leuk stofje gebruikt, dan komt er altijd een stukje daarvan op de stapel erbij. Hoog tijd om er nu eens serieus mee aan de slag te gaan.

Over the last year I have accumulated a lot of African fabric scraps while making quilts and boxes. Also during the workshops Box Making scraps landed 'by accident' on the pile. Before it gets anything bigger I decided to do have some fun with them.

Precies een jaar geleden (klik hier) heb ik al een eerste poging gedaan om met de restjes iets te doen maar dat strandde al snel: de diamant vormen bleven de rest van het jaar een beetje rondhangen op de design wall. Maar nu had ik ineens een echt plan: de stofjes op kleur sorteren, hoe bont ze ook zijn en daarmee verder bouwen aan deze scrap quilt.

Exactly one year ago I tried to get started on a new project using these scraps (link). Maybe I didn't have enough yet as the diamond shapes I made then ended up hanging around my design wall. That changed after suddenly knowing what to do: I needed to sort them out on colour and continue building diamonds for a new quilt.

Revamping golden oldie Lemoyne Star

 Geïnspireerd door de grote designs van de Modern Quilters Guild (MQG) besloot ik een grote Lemoyne ster te maken met Afrikaanse stoffen.

Inspired by the big designs from the Modern Quilters Guild (MQG) I decided to make a very big
Lemoyne star out of African fabrics. 

Met de diamond shape template van Victoria Findlay Wolf als hulpstuk maakte ik een hele grote diamant vorm op freezer paper. Met deze papieren template begon ik aan het middengedeelte van de quilt. Hele lappen stof werden dat! Volgens P. was ik bezig met 'lange halen, snel thuis!'

 I used the diamond template from Victoria Findlay Wolf as a guideline and cut a very big diamond out of frezer paper. With this paper template I started to work on the center piece. 

A bit boring...

Nadat ik de lappen aan elkaar had genaaid, vond ik het eigenlijk behoorlijk saai dus besloot ik dezelfde vorm van deze ster nogmaals uit het centrum te snijden en een paar slagen te draaien. Niet precies 180 gr. maar een puntje minder.

After sewing the pieces together I found this lay out of the block rather boring, so I cut out the same shape from the center part of the star and shifted it a few star points.

Aan de achterkant heb ik de ontstane naad met een strookje Vlieseline 'gelijmd'. Op de voorkant heb ik met een biesje de naad verstevigd met een van de kleuren die al in de Lemoyne ster waren gebruikt. Om een betere balans te krijgen in het ontwerp heb ik ook langs de buitenrand van de ster een biesje aangebracht. Dat geeft gelijk een mooi contrast met de blauwe achtergrond.

With the help of Vlieseline I glued the fabric together on the back. At the front panel I added a strip of fabric to cover up the seams. To balance out the whole design I added a strip of fabric to the outside of the star as well. This gave a nice contrast to the blue background.

In the border I used a lot of smaller diamonds ;)

Nail polish is not my best friend when pinning these African diamonds ;)

Dit is enkel de top. Ik denk dat ik het in Nederland laat quilten op een longarm quiltmachine...

This is only the top. I will have it quilted back home in the Netherlands
