Creating batik for a good cause

Once in a while batik courses are given at the New Horizon Special School in Accra
and the proceeds go towards funding this school.

Loving all that has to do with fabrics in this country I simply had to join!

A choice of Batik stamps from foam and wood

A demonstration how to dip the stamp in the hot wax and bring it to the fabric

After a brief introduction we started stamping the wax onto white calico

I couldn't decide which stamp to use so I used many!
I prepared the fabric by folding it into small squares and filling them with the wax in a diagonal way

Batik dyeing

Waiting for the fabric to dry and for the colour to come out

Removing the wax by stirring the cloth in hot water in a pot over a fire

Rinsing with soap

Batik laundry line

Ironing of the last bits and pieces of the wax

While we were waiting for the fabrics to dye and dry I wondered around the school while the students were doing their handicrafts: English paper piecing!

Some gifted hands stitching 2 pieces of fabric wrapped paper pieces together

Jacqueline and I will be back in this room to see if we can help to raise the sales in the Gift Shop of this school where all products are made by the students!
I think I found my goal while spending time in Ghana!
