Meeting Tei Huagie, Patchwork Artist in Accra, Ghana

Almost one year ago I saw Tei Huagie's work for the first time. It was at the Chale Wote Street Festival in Jamestown, the poorest and oldest part of Accra. I was taken aback by the seize of this patchwork installation. The artist himself was sitting across the street, watching the reactions of the public. We talked a little bit and he gave me his business card where the name Cloth-on-Cloth was written.

A few weeks ago I saw his work again, now at the 'Artist Alliance Gallery'.
Tei Huagie turns his Cloth-on-Cloth patchwork into fashion.

This gallery is situated along the beach. While walking around this 3-storey high building you feel the salty sea breeze coming through the open windows and you wonder if all the paintings and sculptures won't be affected by this.

I decided to contact the artist himself and a week later I was standing in his studio. He showed me all his work and we had a nice conversation. Because there is a shortage of electricity in Ghana on a daily basis and he can't use his sewing machine then, he also paints and constructs sculptures made out of corrugated iron.

The clothes Tei Huagie makes out of his patchwork are a bit warm for this climate but nevertheless he gets custom orders from near and afar.

Patchwork in progress

It was very nice meeting Tei Huagie and sharing the experiences of working with African fabrics. Hopefully we will set up a workshop to share some techniques!

Mondrian and El Anatsui in my home country Holland

Just a short visit to my home country, to see my family and friends, enjoy the cool weather, spring flowers, walking and biking, cheese and culture!
My husband P is travelling via Amsterdam and I don't want to stay behind in Accra. That would be too lonely for me as there is not so much to do for me in this city except for sewing and working in my studio. Besides that, it is too hot outside and I need a boost with art and culture to get inspired!

One of the highlights was the exhibition by El Anatsui at the Prince Claus Fund Gallery in Amsterdam. The artist is born in Ghana and now lives and works in Nigeria. His shimmering wall hangings are made from reclaimed bottle caps.

A short film about El Anatsui

In 'my' hometown The Hague it's Mondrian celebration year and the town is painted in red, white, yellow, black and blue on buildings, in windows and on water!

Heerlijk al die bloembollen die uitkomen!
Enjoying blooming spring!

My suitcases are packed with cheese and cardboard and my batteries are recharged.
I will be able to deal with the African way of life again for a while.

The different colours from Ouidah in Benin

I have made a small selection of the many pictures I took, enjoy!

Parque de las Esculturas in Santiago. Chile

This Sunday morning we went for a walk to Parque de las Esculturas in Santiago.
It is not too far away from where we stay, about a 30 min walk.
It is quite pleasant to walk on a Sunday morning as many roads are closed for traffic
and only bicycles can enter.

When we were almost at the Parque, we noticed this cycling sculpture being placed.
A perfect location as many bikers pass along

I noticed a man taking pictures with his Ipad and I asked him if he liked the statue..
He was the artist who made it!! So he asked me if I liked it! And being a cloggy, I love it!
His name is Hernan Puelma, a sculptor born here in Santiago, Chile

We continued our walk to see the other sculptures in the Parque.
Besides the sculptures there are many different trees

The biggest needle I have ever seen!

After threading the needle I tried to make some stitches in the ground ;))

De toegang tot dit Parque is gratis!
And all of this is free of charge!
