My final days in Accra

En dan is het dan eindelijk zo ver: mijn laatste week in Accra - Ghana is aangebroken.

Met gemengde gevoelens ga ik voor de allerlaatste keer naar de Makola markt waar talloze stalletjes en winkeltjes tot de nok toe zijn gevuld met stoffen, zowel lokaal geproduceerd als Chinese namaak. Gelukkig weet ik na 3 jaar waar ik goed kan slagen.

At last my final days in Accra - Ghana are there. 

Filled with mixed emotions I went for one more time to the Makola market to buy just a little bit more fabric. So many stalls and little shops are filled from floor to ceiling with local and foreign (China counterfeit) fabrics. Fortunately, after 3 years, I know where to go for my fabric stash.

Nog een keertje ga ik langs bij de sjieke Vlisco winkel in Accra Mall waar het prima is uit te houden in de heerlijke gekoelde lucht. Heel wat anders dan op de markt! De prijzen liggen natuurlijk een stuk hoger met deze in Nederland geproduceerde stoffen!

One more visit to the Vlisco fabric store at the Accra Mall can not be skipped! In this air-conditioned shop you can only find fabrics produced in the Netherlands for the West-African market. Prices are significant higher, and so is the quality!

My quilt group friends made me a farewell present with local fabrics...

In de afgelopen maanden heb ik mijn kennis van het dozen maken mogen delen met een paar jongens van een klein bedrijfje in Accra. Ook van hun moet ik helaas afscheid nemen. Maar ik weet zeker dat ze met hun nieuwe vaardigheid vele mooie doosjes zullen gaan verkopen.

In the past few months I had the pleasure of sharing my box making skills with a few boys from a small company in Accra. Unfortunately I had to say goodbye to them as well. But I am pretty sure they will be able to use their new skills and make beautiful boxes for the local market.

Voor twee lieve vriendinnen heb ik op de valreep deze 2 mandjes gemaakt met repen stof en katoen touw. Een heel leuk werkje waar ik over een tijdje nog eens mee door wil gaan.

For two dear friends I made 2 baskets from strips of fabric and cotton rope. So much fun to do, I definitely will do again in the near future. 

En dan is het koffers pakken geblazen! Omdat ik niet weet hoe lang het zal duren voordat de spullen met de verhuizer komen neem ik zoveel mogelijk stof zelf mee... 

Finally the moment is there to pack my suitcases.Because I have no idea how long our shipment of personal effects will take I try to take as much fabric as possible with me on the plane...

Jamestown - Accra

 

 Op mijn eerste dag in Accra zijn we met de auto gaan rondrijden om een idee te krijgen hoe het leven zich hier af speelt. Ons tochtje ging langs Jamestown, een vissersdorpje dat het oudste en armste deel van Accra is.

Vanaf de vuurtoren loopt een weg naar beneden naar het strand dat vol staat met zelfgebouwde huisjes en winkeltjes die op en in elkaar staan. We werden er rondgeleid door een leraar van het schooltje van dit dorp die op die manier wat bijverdient.

On my first day in Accra we drove around to see what Accra is like

and passed  Jamestown, an old fishing village and the oldest and poorest area of Accra.

A road leads down from the lighthouse to the harbour with shops and houses covered corrugated roofs and dirty sandy roads.

One of the teachers of the local school showed us around.

Het is voor mij behoorlijk omschakelen. 

Weten dat ik hier de komende jaren zal blijven is wel wat anders dan dat je hier als toerist langs komt. Neem daarbij het warme en vochtige klimaat, dan moet ik dus echt wennen en acclimatiseren.

Hopelijk kunnen we over een week in ons appartement en komen de spullen uit Chili aan, waaronder mijn naaimachine. 

I really have to make a mental switch. The weather is something I have to get used to too.

Knowing we will be here for a couple of years is definitely different from being a tourist passing by.

Hopefully we can move into our apartment by next week and will our shipment arrive from Chile with my sewing machine.

Eindelijk is het dan zover!

De verplichte vaccinaties zitten in mijn armen

Finally I am leaving for Ghana!

Op het Birmingham Quilt Festival al wat Ghanese stofjes en info ingeslagen bij

 At the Birmingham Quilt Festival I bumped into the African Fabric Shop and bought some Ghanaian fabrics and some info about them

 P had nog 2 kilo ruimte in zijn koffer toen hij 2 maanden geleden vertrok en bracht deze stofjes alvast mee

P had some space left in his suitcase when he left two months ago and took these with him

De afstand van Amsterdam naar Accra is 5312km

 Aan boord van het vliegtuig kon ik op het beeldscherm de route volgen die we aflegden

The distance between Amsterdam and Accra is 3300 miles

During the flight I could follow the route taken by the airline

 Hello!

Een paar jaar geleden besloten we niet meer met al ons huisraad van land naar land te gaan en staan onze spullen opgeslagen in Nederland. Nu reizen we dus met onze koffers naar de volgende standplaats en alleen de fietsen, keukenspullen en mijn naaimachine en gereedschappen worden verscheept.

Voorlopig zitten we nog in een hotel en wachten opdat onze spullen aankomen en we in een appartementje kunnen. Tot die tijd ga ik de omgeving ontdekken.

A few years ago we decided not to move around with all our belongings any more but to put them in storage instead in Holland. We now travel with a few suitcases and only our bikes, kitchen stuff and my sewing machine and tools are being shipped.

Until they arrive and we can move into an apartment we stay at a hotel and I will start exploring the neighbourhood.

So long, Santiago

Daar gaat ons bed, mijn werktafel en nog veel meer;

alles wat niet mee gaat naar Ghana is verkocht. Opgeruimd staat netjes, zullen we maar zeggen ;)

Ik hoop alleen dat deze spullen op het dak zijn blijven zitten onderweg naar de nieuwe eigenaar...

Everything, that is not coming to Ghana with us, is sold:

our bed, my sewing table and a lot more. Good riddance ;)

I only hope this stuff has stayed on top of the car while driving to the new owner's place...

Op mijn allerlaatste dag in Santiago gaan we nog een keer naar het oude centrum

naar een buurtje met prachtige oude en vervallen panden uit 1920

On my last day in Santiago we visit the old city center one more time,

to an old neighbourhood with some old buildings from around the 1920's

Rond Plaza de Armas is het weer gezellig druk

Het is tijd om weer naar het hotel te gaan en de laatste spullen in de koffers te stoppen

Morgen maak ik weer de lange vlucht van 18 uur in de blauwe vogel

en vlieg ik weer naar 'huis' in Nederland

Time to go back to the hotel and pack the last things in my suitcases

Tomorrow I will make the long flight back to 'home' in Holland

Preparing the next move

 

Als je gaat verhuizen naar een ander land op een ander continent,

kun je de bij elkaar verzamelde kruiden, thee, wijn en drank niet meegeven met de verhuizer

dus je snapt dat het hier de laatste dagen erg gezellig is! Ja, schenk nog maar een keertje in! ;)

Ook de ijskast moet leeg en met de spullen uit de voorraadkast

 kan ik vast wel iemand blij maken

Niet vergeten de quilts van de muren te halen en op te vouwen,

die moeten ook mee met de verhuizer!

When moving to another country, on another continent,

all herbs 'n spices, teas, wine and liquors you collected, can't be shipped.

So you understand it is party of leftovers everyday at my place! Yes, pour me another wine please! ;)

The fridge has to be emptied and the pantry as well

Still someone will be very happy with all that is left over.

I should not forget to take down the quilts from the wall, they have to be shipped as well!

Mijn Sing-a-Long Singer is nagekeken en gaat ook mee:

er is daar dezelfde voltage dus ik kan er daar meteen weer mee aan de slag...

My Sing-a-Long Singer has been serviced and is moving too:

the voltage in Ghana is the same as in Chile so I can start there right away

with the African fabrics, made in Holland(Vlisco!)

My little-house quilt  is coming with me to Holland in my suitcase

Waar en hoe we daar gaan wonen, ik heb nog geen idee!

Ik zie het wel als ik daar over 2 maanden naartoe ga

Eerst ga ik naar huis naar familie en vrienden

en op vakantie met mijn lief (alweer 31! jaar) P

Where and how we will live I have no idea!

I will see it when I get there, in 2 months time

First stop is Holland to be with my family and friends

and enjoy a long holiday with my love (of 31 years!) P

Home is where the heart is

Huisjes bouwen van restjes stof... Nadat ik ze in mijn koffer had gestopt van São Paulo naar Nederland (klik) heb ik er eigenlijk niets meer mee gedaan. 

Toen gingen ze weer mee de koffer in naar Santiago en hingen hier een tijdje aan de design muur.
En nu, terwijl we ons voorbereiden op onze verhuizing naar Ghana, ben ik eindelijk
weer huisjes in elkaar aan het zetten

I didn't do anything with it. Then I brought them with me to Santiago and put them on my design wall.
And now, while preparing the next move to Ghana, I am finally building houses again

Mijn quiltmaatje is naar haar familie overzee, dus moet ik mezelf oppeppen om er tegenaan te gaan.

Gelukkig mag ik haar naaimachine lenen en nu stikken de lapjes makkelijker aan elkaar vast

My quilt buddy is away visiting her family overseas, so I have to keep myself busy. Lucky me I can use her sewing machine which makes the patching going smooth

Er zijn al verschillende verhuisbedrijven langs geweest om een quotatie te maken voor de paar spullen die we eventueel mee willen nemen naar Ghana. 

Niet alles is daar even makkelijk te krijgen dus als we de TV, naaimachine, keukenspullen en mountainbikes mee kunnen nemen zou dat wel fijn zijn...

In the meantime a few moving companies came by to give us a quote. We are not sure if items such as the TV, sewing machine, mountain bikes and a few kitchen appliances are available in Ghana

Vandaag tijdens het naaien, keek ik naar een leuke documentaire over The Quiltmakers of Gee's Bend. Een prachtig verhaal en hele mooie quilts komen er voorbij

Count down

Het aftellen en afstrepen is weer begonnen. Over een week stap ik weer in de blauwe vogel die mij in 17 uur vliegen naar mijn liefste in Chili brengt. Het was stil op mijn blog, maar ik heb niet stil gezeten!

De afgelopen maanden stonden in het teken van de verhuizing van mijn ouders. Hun huis is verkocht en ze hebben een heerlijk appartement gevonden met een prachtig uitzicht! 

Tussen de bedrijven door zat ik af en toe achter de naaimachine om aan verschillende projecten te werken

It has been a bit quiet on my blog but I have been busy for the last few months!

My parents sold their house and moved to an apartment, so we had to clean out a lot of stuff. Every now and then I set behind my sewing machine and worked on a few different projects

Only a sleef and a stick to hang up these 2 quilts together and a place on the wall...

  Een eerste set-up voor een bestelling, zou het nog lukken deze af te krijgen voordat ik volgende week vertrek?
