 Op de laatste Patchwork en Quiltdagen 2019 in Rijswijk was deze quilt ook te bewonderen.

De afmeting is 2,30 x 2,30 meter.

This quilt was also displayed at the latest Patchwork and Quilt days in Rijswijk (NL).

It measures 90" x 90"

Toen deze quilt eenmaal naast de andere quilts hing kreeg ik pas door hoe groot hij eigenlijk is.

When the quilt was finally hanging in between the others, I only realised the size of it.

With Maggie and Iris

Twee vriendinnen kwamen over uit het buitenland om mij en mijn Afrikaanse quilts te zien! We kennen elkaar uit de tijd dat we alle drie in Singapore woonden en lid waren van de lokale quiltgroep.

Two dear friends from my time in Singapore came by to see me and my African quilts.

We know each other from the time we all lived in Singapore and were members of the local quilting group.

Deze quilt kwam een jaar geleden tot stand en begon met een paar hoopjes van stofresten...

This quilt came about almost one year ago and started with e few heaps of scraps...

Met de 15-minuten-spelen technique kwamen de Afrikaanse diamanten tevoorschijn...

With the 15-minutes-of-play the African diamonds came alive...

Mijn ontwerpmuur was al snel te klein...

My design wall became too small pretty soon...

Toen de top eenmaal klaar was en nog niet gequilt ...

My first visitors to Ghana

Mijn eerste bezoekers zijn langs geweest en in een week heb ik hun 'mijn Ghana' geprobeerd te laten zien.

My first visitors came by and in one week I tried to show them 'my Ghana'.

De eerste dag zijn we met Miss Taxi Ghana op stap gegaan; zij liet ons 'haar' Accra zien

On the first day we made a tour with Miss Taxi Ghana, she showed us 'her' Accra

De mooie lommerrijke campus van de Universiteit van Ghana, opgezet door de Engelsen in 1948

Hierna reden we verder en kwamen langs dit stalletje wat alleen Ghanese stoffen verkoopt. Bijna alle andere winkeltjes verkopen ook de goedkopere copies uit China

We left the campus and stopped at this little shop selling only 'made in Ghana' fabrics. Most other shops also sell the cheaper copies from China.

Het werd steeds warmer en we kochten onderweg wat fruit van een 'street vendor'

The temperature went up and we bought some fruit from a street vendor

Bij het kleine kralenfabriekje Tet Glass Beads slaan we wat kraaltjes in

We made a stop at a small glass factory Tet Glass Beads and got a few beads

Terwijl de jongen de verschillende prijzen bij elkaar optelde, speelde het dochtertje met de lokale kinderen en gaf haar Koningsbril weg.... ;)

While this young boy calculated the beads the little girl played with the local kids and gave away her orange sunglasses... ;)

Daarna reden we door naar Jamestown, het armste gedeelte van Accra aan de kust.

Het roken van vis is hier de voornaamste bron van inkomsten

We continued to Jamestown, the poorest part of Accra at the coast.

Smoking fish is the main source of income

Deze man wilde graag dat ons meisje een foto van hem maakte.

Bijna iedereen vond het leuk als zij haar fototoestel pakte, terwijl moeder en ik vaak moeite hadden met de situatie waarin de armen zich bevinden

This kind man asked our girl to make a picture of him. Apparently the local people like to see her taking pictures with her camera when we feel troubled to do so

De volgende dag werden er alvast mandjes uit Bolga ingeslagen! 

The next day some souvenirs were bought: Bolga baskets!

The very first Geckoboxes workshop in Ghana!

 De eerste workshop Box-making in Ghana is achter de rug!

Gisteren kwamen 4 vrouwen het uitproberen en ze waren heel erg enthousiast! ;)

The very first Box-making workshop in Ghana has taken place!

Yesterday 4 women come to my place to try it out and they were all filled with enthusiasm!

 

 

Na het zien van mijn dozen konden ze niet wachten om er zelf eentje te maken

Terwijl ik ons huisje nog lang niet op orde heb! Maar dat heeft ook geen haast: 

met vrienden samen werken is veel leuker!

 After having seen my boxes they couldn't wait to get started and make one themselves

Although I haven't quite finished settling in, I was ready to give it a go!

Doing fun things with friends gives me more energy!

Ieder bracht zelf de stof mee voor de buiten- en binnenkant. De rest lag voor ze klaar.

Niet iedereen kreeg haar doos af, maar eentje wel en dit is haar resultaat:

They all brought their own fabrics for the in- and outside of the box, I prepared the rest.

Not all of them finished the box completely except for one as you can see here:

De kralen zijn uit haar voorraad en vormen werkelijk 'the finishing touch'! 

The beads are from her stash and really are the finishing touch!

Nu moet ik gaan nadenken over verschillende mogelijkheden voor het geven van workshops

Zoals het maken van kits met voorgesneden karton en 'lappies' (Afrikaanse stofjes),

verschillende soorten dozen om te maken, etc

Kortom: het ijzer smeden terwijl het nog heet is!

Right now I have to start with a concept for giving more workshops, like preparing kits with pre-cut cardboards and a set of different African fabrics, different levels of making boxes, etc

I have to move forward and strike while the iron is hot!

Quilt made out of baby and toddler clothes

De quilt is af en geleverd! 

The quilt is finished and delivered! 

 In mijn vorige blogpost liet ik je al de 9 gequilte delen van dit project zien

Er zitten allerlei stoffen in deze quilt verwerkt en de rekbare heb ik eerst met vlieseline H200 versterkt. 3 Rijen van 3 blokken heb ik met de machine aan elkaar gestikt. Daarna de 3 rijen onder elkaar gezet. Door het gewicht van de quilt een heel werk waarbij de eettafel handig van pas kwam.

In my last blog-post I showed you the 9 different sets of quilted blocks

There are many different fabrics used in this quilt and the stretchy ones I enforced with H200 vlieseline before using it. I made 3 rows of 3 blocks and these rows I sew together to make the quilt. Because of the weight of the quilt, the dining table came in handy!

Om de quilt toch een beetje soepel te laten blijven, raadde Nicolette van Dutch Comfort mij aan om eerst de bovenlaag aan elkaar te stikken en daarna de achterkant met de hand te sluiten. Voor dit klusje kwam de strijkplank goed van pas

To keep the quilt supple my friend from  Dutch Comfort advised me to first stitch the top layer together and to stitch the backing separately by hand . For this last one the ironing board came in handy

Naast het quilten met de machine heb ik ook de knoopjes van de gebruikte kinderkleding gebruikt als middel om de 3 lagen met elkaar te verbinden 

Besides quilting by machine I used the buttons from the clothes to 'quilt' some knitted parts of the quilt

 De gestreepte stof van de achterkant heb ik ook voor de bies gebruikt en daarbij het streepje dwars laten lopen. Een overgebleven kraagje is op de achterkant gegaan om mijn 'handtekening' mooi te maken

I used the same fabric from the back for the binding and

a pretty collar to embellish my 'signature' on the back

Op deze manier genieten ze weer elke dag van de dierbare herinneringen die er aan deze stofjes kleven; zoals de lakentjes waar hun overleden dochtertje onder heeft geslapen, het jurkje dat ze droeg, het balletpakje waar hun volwassen dochter allang is uitgegroeid, de stoere Ajax broek van hun zoon en het t-shirtje uit de tijd dat ze in Brazilië woonden en nog veel meer. 

Bij elk kleding stuk heb ik geprobeerd dat deel te gebruiken dat het meeste tot mijn verbeelding sprak en daardoor het was een hele leuke opdracht om te mogen maken

 With this quilt they will enjoy all the cherished memories that come with these clothes of their 4 children; like the bedsheets from their baby-daughter who died too soon, the dress she wore, the cute ballet outfit from their now teenage daughter, the Ajax soccer short from their son, a t-shirt from the time they lived in Brazil, all outgrown by now

I tried to capture those memories in using that specific part of every item in this quilt and by doing so, creating this quilt became very special to me.

 

PS: ondertussen ben ik veilig in Ghana aangekomen en heb ik al veel mooie indrukken om met je te delen! 

PS: in the meantime I arrived safe and sound in Ghana and have many impressions already to share with you!

Deadline Baby Love Quilt!

Over 5 dagen vertrek ik naar Ghana

en deze Baby Love Quilt moet af voor dat ik op het vliegtuig stap

dus ik laat nu even snel wat foto's zien en ga gauw weer verder met naald en draad

My departure to Ghana is in 5 days from today

and I want/have to finish this Baby Love Quilt for my friend before I fly
so I post these pictures quickly and go back to sewing, sewing, sewing...

Sweet Cherry Chirps

 Ze zijn klaar! Twee quiltjes, 30x30cm, gespannen op schildersdoek,

besteld door een oud klasgenootje van de basisschool!

They are finished! Two small quilts, measuring 12" square, stretched on canvas,

custom order by an old classmate from elementary school!

Ze wilde 2 quiltjes met 3 vogeltjes op elk die naar elkaar kijken, twieten, gluren, etc

She loved to have 2 quilts with 3 little birds on each facing each other

Machine gepieced en met verschillende kleuren garen accenten aangebracht, 

en met een smal lintje kleine knoopjes geborduurd

Alleen aan de voorkant zit batting, aan de zijkanten en achterkant niet, 

hierdoor kun je het quiltje makkelijker, en mooier, om het frame spannen

Machine pieced, with different colours thread I added some more depth 

and with a small ribbon I embroidered small knots

Only the front has batting, to the sides and back there is none.

This makes it easier, and nicer, to stretch the fabric around the frame

De stof is op de hoeken aan de boven en onderkant

 op dezelfde wijze omgevouwen en vastgeniet 

The fabric is folded into one direction at both corners at the top and at the bottom

Op de achterkant een label geplakt met behulp van Vliesofix

At the back I fixed a label with fusible web

Goed ingepakt in bubbelplastic vliegen de Cherry Chirps nu naar de Canarische eilanden 

waar mijn vriendin van vroeger nu woont: een prachtige nieuwe bestemming!

Packed safely in bubble wrap the Cherry Chirps are flying to the Canary Island 

where my childhood friend lives now: a real nice new destination!
