Even de batterij opladen met familie en vrienden, frisse wind, wandelen en fietsen, kunst en cultuur!

Het is maar een kort bezoek omdat P via Amsterdam moet reizen en ik niet alleen in Accra wil achterblijven. Daarvoor is er te weinig te doen, te weinig afleiding, te warm en bovendien mis ik musea met kunst en cultuur om creatief geïnspireerd te worden.

Just a short visit to my home country, to see my family and friends, enjoy the cool weather, spring flowers, walking and biking, cheese and culture!

My husband P is travelling via Amsterdam and I don't want to stay behind in Accra. That would be too lonely for me as there is not so much to do for me in this city except for sewing and working in my studio. Besides that, it is too hot outside and I need a boost with art and culture to get inspired!

Een van de hoogtepunten waren de kunstwerken van El Anatsui in de Galerie van het Prins Claus Fonds in Amsterdam op de Herengracht 603, vlakbij het Tassenmuseum. Deze kunstenaar is geboren in Ghana en leeft en werkt in Nigeria. Zijn wandkleden zijn gemaakt met recycled glanzende flessendoppen.

One of the highlights was the exhibition by El Anatsui at the Prince Claus Fund Gallery in Amsterdam. The artist is born in Ghana and now lives and works in Nigeria. His shimmering wall hangings are made from reclaimed bottle caps.

A short film about El Anatsui

In 'mijn' stad Den Haag kleurt het feestjaar van Mondriaan en De Stijl vele gevels, vitrines en zelfs de Hofvijver in de bekende vlakken van rood, geel, wit, zwart en blauw!

In 'my' hometown The Hague it's Mondrian celebration year and the town is painted in red, white, yellow, black and blue on buildings, in windows and on water!

Mijn koffers zijn weer gepakt met kaas en karton en mijn batterij is weer opgeladen. 

Ik kan er weer een tijdje tegen!

My suitcases are packed with cheese and cardboard and my batteries are recharged. 

I will be able to deal with the African way of life again for a while.

Sewing plastic waste in Ghana

Waterzakjes zijn erg populair in Ghana, ze zijn goedkoper dan flesjes en iedereen drinkt minstens 1 zakje per dag. Daarna wordt het zakje achteloos weggegooid. Plastic afval ligt hier dus overal langs de kant van de weg en in de goten, op het strand en waait mee met de wind.

 Er is helaas nog geen landelijk beleid in Ghana voor recycling van plastic, papier en glas.

Maar kleinschalige initiatieven zijn er wel en Trashy Bags is daar een van.

Water sachets are very populair in Ghana as they are much cheaper than plastic water bottles. At least one sachet a person a day is used and thrown away on the street. Plastic waste is everywhere along the streets, in the gutter, on the beach, out in the fields and blows around in the air.

Unfortunately their is a lack of awareness for recycling plastic, paper and glass in this country. So it is good to see that there are some clever people trying to do something about this and create work at the same time: Trashy Bags!

 Na het wassen en drogen gaat er een heel team van mannen en vrouwen achter de naaimachine aan de slag en komen er allerlei soorten tassen tevoorschijn. Het fabriekje is in een oud woonhuis en tijdens een rondleiding door het fabriekje kwamen we door verschillende kamertjes die vol stonden met elektrische naaimachines.

After washing and drying a team of men and women start sewing the sachets and make all kinds of different bags. The factory is located in an old house with many small rooms. All rooms were filled with materials and running electric sewing machines.

She found the perfect seat height for sewing!

Dress Recycle

Tijdens een wandeling door Las Condes, een supermoderne wijk met dure winkels, appartementen, hotels en restaurants in Santiago, viel mijn oog op een kleurrijke rok achter een raam. Eerst dacht ik dat het een winkel was, maar toen zag ik dat het de ingang was van Hotel W.

During a walk through the posh neighbourhood of Las Condes in Santiago, with its expensive shops, apartments, hotels and restaurants, I noticed a colourful skirt behind a window. At first I thought it belonged to a shop but then I noticed it was the entrance to the Hotel W.

In een hoekje samengedrukt stonden meerdere 'dames' als onderdeel van een tentoonstelling over hergebruik van afvalmaterialen. De gebruikte materialen waren suikerzakjes, creditcards, bioscoopkaartjes, plastic tasjes, glas, etc.

Flogged into a corner were these ladies standing as part of an exhibition about re-use of all kinds of materials. Creditcards, paper, tickets, plastic bags, glass, etc
