On the road to the northern region of Ghana

Last week I went to the northern region of Ghana with a quilting friend from Accra. We travelled by car and in one week we were able to visit many beautiful en interesting locations.  It was overwhelming at times and I need a few blog posts to give you an idea what this part of Ghana has to offer...

Trucks on the road

Toll stop with refreshment shops alongside

Cow transport

Road accident

First stop Kumasi, Sunday afternoon

Sunday afternoon, resting in the shade

Mannequins waiting for a new business day

Maandag, op pad naar de dorpjes rond Kumasi
Eerste stop is Kurofrom.

Monday, to the villages around Kumasi.
First stop is Kurofrom where brass beads and figures are made

Moulds to make brass figures ;)

We hebben een paar messing naaimachientjes besteld, ze zijn ongeveer 8cm groot. Een dezer dagen worden ze afgeleverd!
We ordered a few brass sewing machines, about 3" big. Hopefully they will be delivered soon!

All made out of recycled brass

Next stop Ntonso: Adrinka manufactures

Adrinka symbols on stamps made out of calebas

The black dye is made out of the bark of a badie tree

After soaking, pounding and boiling the black paint is ready to be stamped on cloth

Adinkra cloth is traditionally worn by men in the form of a toga, mostly during funerals

Next stop is Bonwire, town of the kente weavers

Only male weave kente: colourful geometric designs strongly associated with the Ashanti tribe

Preparing the warp for a new kente cloth

Top quality kente cloth for sale along the street in Bonwire

Ik heb een aantal stroken gekocht, maar weet nog niet wat ik ermee ga doen!
I bought some strips but I am not sure yet what I will do with them...

Multitasking

Grilled plantains

Back to the hotel we got stuck in traffic, but there is always something to see!

Wordt vervolgd!
To be continued!

Groetjes, Hilde
