DD is weer de Atlantische Oceaan over gevlogen naar haar huisje in Londen 

en samen hebben we genoten van ons snoepreisje naar Rio!

DD has crossed the Atlantic Ocean again and is back in London. 

We have had a wonderful time together and enjoyed our short trip to Rio!

A new book full with inspiration!

 Met de post is een nieuw boek binnen gekomen, vol met prachtige foto's van 'Schmuckobjecte' oftewel prachtige kleine sieraden van stof zoals speldenkussens en hangers. Het is het 3de boek van Hilde Klatt en de designs zijn van haar moeder Liesel. Kortom vol met INSPIRATIE!

A new book has arrived and I love it! This is the 3rd book of Hilde Klatt and the designs are from her mother Liesel. It is full with pictures of 'schmuckobjekte', beautiful 'jewel' objects made out of fabric like pincushions and tree hangers and full with INSPIRATION!

Vorig jaar organiseerden Hilde en ik een internationale pincushion swap and met dit boek begint het weer te jeuken om weer een kussentje te maken. Ze heeft een paar lapjes in de envelop erbij gestopt en nu heb ik natuurlijk geen excuus... :o)

Last year Hilde and I organized an international pincushion swap and this book triggers the urge to make some pincushions again! She added some fabric to the parcel to... :o)

What started as a squarish convergence quilt with a pattern by Ricky Tims, turned out to be an abundance of circles and pastel colours

Wat begon als een strakke 'convergence' quilt met rechte hoeken naar een patroon van Ricky Tims, is veranderd in een zee van cirkels en pastelkleuren

 

It measures 90 cm (35.5") square

 De maat is 90 vierkante cm

Rose-Anne came up with this name (long live Skype!)

 Lieve Rose-Anne bedacht de naam (lang leve de Skype)

I love this turquoise

 De turquoise kleur komt zo mooi naar boven

Maybe it sounds weird, but I am actually very proud with the outcome! It was a constant searching and balancing of shapes, colours and lines.

Misschien klinkt het raar, maar ik ben hier best trots op! Het was een enorm zoeken naar de juiste balans tussen de stofvormen, kleur en bijpassende quiltlijnen.

Some other news:

I still had not received my pincushion from the swap I organized with Hilde in Germany in March. But finally it arrived yesterday, after 5 weeks in the mail with the Easter chocolate bunny still inside! ;-) Thank you Michi for the lovely Lotus Pincushion!

Ik had nog steeds mijn pincushion niet ontvangen van de swap die ik samen met Hilde uit Duitsland in maart had georganiseerd. Gisteren kwam het pakje eindelijk aan! Het chocolade passhaasje zat er nog in! Dank je wel Michi voor deze prachtige Lotus Pincushion!

And last but not least, I joined a (Dutch) story contest about my favorite quilt, Gekko Quilt. You can vote for me at the website of the Quilterspalet, a shop in The Hague, Holland. If you would like to vote for me just click on stem op deze inzending besides the picture of my quilt. You have to repeat one more time this click! My DD will translate the story in proper English for me, so that will follow soon.

En als laatste nog even dit: ik heb een verhaaltje ingestuurd voor een wedstrijd bij de Quilterspalet. Het gaat over mijn Gecko quilt. Als je het leuk vind kun je op mij stemmen!

Slowly making progress

Slowly more doodle lines are added to my Gecko quilt. I love to see how the soft shine of the quilting thread merges with the colours of the fabrics. But using this thread with the BSR is not always fun.... 

Langzaam aan komen er meer steekjes bij in lange fantasielijnen. Het is een mooi proces om te zien hoe de kleuren van dit zachte glanzende draad zich mengen met de kleuren van de stoffen. Maar wat een vervelende draad is het toch om met de BSR te gebruiken...

Some thoughts and tips

When Hilde asked me if I wanted to join her in organizing a pincushion swap I was flattered because I admire her work and enjoy her book about pentagons. Little by little people started signing up and it became more and more a fun project to do.

Toen Hilde mij vroeg of ik samen met haar een speldenkussen swap wilde organizeren, voelde ik mij gevleid. Ik vind haar werk erg leuk en maak vaak gebruik van haar Pentagon boek. Langzaam aan kwamen de aanmeldingen binnen en werd de swap een steeds leuker projekt.

As Hilde lives in Germany and I live in Brazil, most people signed up are from these two countries. For me a fun way to practice my Portuguese. And best of all, soon I will meet some of them who live in São Paulo as well!
If some of you still have not heard from their swap partner, please let us know and we will try to help to solve the (language) problems. It is just great to know that quilting and other kinds of crafts brings people together and that Swaps are all about sharing fun and loving thoughts as Hilde puts it! Check out her blog as her "Liesel’s Hexagon Technique" is reprinted!


Omdat Hilde in Duitsland woont en ik in Brazilië, zijn de meeste aanmeldingen uit deze twee landen. Voor mij gelijk een goede reden om mijn Portugees te oefenen. En nog leuker is het feit dat ik binnenkort een paar van hen zal ontmoeten! Als je nog steeds niets gehoord hebt van je swap partner zullen wij proberen het (taal) probleem op te lossen. Het is gewoon fantastisch om te weten dat quilten, en ook andere vormen van handwerken, mensen samenbrengt: swaps draaien om het plezier en delen van goede intenties zoals Hilde mij toevertrouwde. Kijk even op haar blog, want ze heeft een give-away van een herdruk van haar boek "Liesel’s Hexagon Technique"!

I have been working on some House blocks again with Japanese fabrics. It is all a fiddly work and I am longing to go and sit behind the sewing machine and quilt my Gecko quilt...

De laatste paar dagen heb ik weer zitten stoeien met Japanse stofjes. Maar het wordt tijd dat ik weer eens achter de naaimachine kruip en de Geckoquilt ga quilten...

Last but not least I should tell you about this lovely free give away at her block! I know her from my time in Singapore and she makes nice quilts and boxes. The fabrics she is giving away are cheering up my day! Maybe I should not have told you... ;-)

En nog even dit: er is een hele leuke giveaway op haar blog. Ik ken haar uit mijn 'Singapore-tijd' en ze maakt mooie quilts en dozen. De stofjes die ze weg gaat geven zijn lekker vrolijk. Misschien had ik je het eigenlijk niet moeten vertellen... ;-)

Quilt shop hop in Holland

Together with my friend Rose-Anne, whose quilt was one of the finalists in Lancaster last week, I went on a quilt shop hop through the Dutch countryside! She happens to be in Holland at the same time! 

And of course I had to take pictures from the small pincushions I saw! I could not resist buying typical Dutch fabric called Paapjestof. This is hand printed fabric and comes in stunning colours.  

Rose-Anne spoiled me for my birthday with fabric and a book from one of my favorite fabric designers K. Fassett.  

And last but not least it is almost April 3rd and there is still time to sign in for the International Pincushion Swap! 

Samen met mijn vriendin Rose-Anne, wiens quilt vorige week op de tentoonstelling in Lancaster als een van de finalisten hing, ben ik op een quiltshop hop gegaan. Toevallig is zij ook deze week in Nederland.  

We genoten van het mooie weer en het Hollandse landschap  en reden via Nieuwpoort naar Schoonhoven. Toen ik deze kleine speldenkussentjes zag, moest ik natuurlijk even een foto maken! Bij De Schapekop kocht ik een stapeltje Paapjestof in prachtige kleuren. Rose-Anne verwende mij met een verjaardagskado: stofjes en een boek van K. Fassett.

Pincushion Give Away!

Both Hilde and I are busy making pincushions and trying out different colour combinations. Did you get started as well? I personally love the pentagons and hexagons, it is so easy to bring along or sewing the parts when watching the telly.


Zowel Hilde als ik zijn druk in de weer met het maken van speldenkussentjes! We proberen allerlei kleuren combinaties uit. Ben jij er ook al mee begonnen? Persoonlijk vind ik de pentagons en hexagons het leukste om te maken. Ze zijn makkelijk mee te nemen of bij de tv in elkaar te zetten.

I will bring my UFO pincushions in a suitcase to Holland. Tomorrow I is my flight! I am thrilled to go and see my DD, family and friends. It's been only 3 months I am living in São Paulo but I miss them a lot. It will be good to be back on Dutch soil for about two weeks and eat Dutch goodies like stroopwafels and drop!
Setting up a new life in a new country is not always easy. I have to build up a new life, make new friends and feel myself part of a new community. This takes some time. It will be good to go back to my roots for about 2 weeks and reload the battery. But this swap is giving me a lot of fun and by surprise I got connected to the Brazilian quilting community! Thanks to Beth!


Morgen stap ik op het vliegtuig naar Nederland met in mijn koffer de UFO pincushions. Ik ben zo ontzettend blij weer even voet op Hollandse bodem te kunnen zetten en samen met mijn ouders, schoonmoeder en dochter mijn verjaardag te kunnen vieren. En even naar de HEMA, drop en stroopwafels inslaan. Volkoren bisquitjes voor bij de thee! Aaahhh.
Het opzetten van een nieuw leven in een ander land is niet altijd even makkelijk. Het duurt gewoon een tijdje voordat je je draai hebt gevonden en weet wie je vrienden kunnen zijn. Daarom is het fijn om even terug te kunnen gaan en bij te tanken. Dan kan ik er daarna weer met frisse moed tegen aan!
Deze swap is leuk om te doen en het brengt mij onverwachts in contact met een grote groep quilters hier in Brazilië dankzij Beth!

The last few days I have been busy with making boxes for different charity events. This Jewelry box is for a Gala event in São Paulo, organized by the International New Comers group. I hope this box will raise some money during the silent auction. The money goes to local charities in São Paulo.


De afgelopen dagen ben ik druk in de weer geweest met dozen maken voor verschillende goede doelen. De sieraden doos hier boven is voor een Gala avond van de International New Comers group. Tijdens een soort van stille veiling, waarbij je een bedrag opschrijft bij een voorwerp, en de volgende persoon erover heen kan bieden door weer een nieuw bedrag op te schrijven, kan er op deze doos geboden worden. Het geld is voor een van de goede doelen in São Paulo.

And these boxes are for a Dutch initiative; during an Indonesian Ricetable event, people can buy these boxes and the money goes to an local Dutch charity foundation. A tea-box, a business card box, Delft's Blue and some small bracelets boxes.


Deze dozen zijn voor een Nederlands fonds hier in São Paulo. Tijdens een Indonesische rijsttafel avond, kan men deze dozen kopen. De opbrengst is voor het goede doel. Een theedoos, businesskaarthouder, Delft's blauwe doos en 2 armbandendoosjes.

Rooster Quilt By Rose-Anne de Haan

Today the American Quilters Society quilt show in Lancaster starts and this quilt is one of the finalists! My friend Rose-Anne de Haan made it and I am so proud of her! Because she has no blog herself, I asked her to use this space and tell something more about the quilt.

Vandaag begint de American Quilters Society quiltshow in Lancaster, en deze quilt is een van de finalisten. Mijn vriendin Rose-Anne de Haan heeft hem gemaakt en ik ben erg trots op haar! Omdat zij zelf geen blog heeft, laat ik haar hier even aan het woord.

Rose-Anne: Thanks to you Hilde, I found out about quilting. When we both lived in Singapore you pulled me along to the ANZA quilters group, and from then on I was hooked! When I later moved to Shanghai, I started a quilters group there together with Vreni, who also moved to the same city from Singapore. After 7 years this group is still thriving!

Rose-Anne: dankzij jou Hilde, ben ik met quilten in kontakt gekomen. Toen we allebei in Singapore woonden, sleepte jij me mee naar de ANZA quiltgroep en sindsdien ben ik verkocht! Toen ik later naar Shanghai verhuisde, heb ik daar een quiltgroep opgestart, samen met Vreni, die daar ook ging wonen vanuit Singapore. Nu, na 7 jaar, is het nog steeds een hele actieve groep.

The Rooster applique

And than I landed in Quilters' heaven: the USA. The Rooster's Rose Garden is the result of a block of the month applique class I took in the local quilt shop Quilters Heaven (click). The ladies who took the same class still meet twice a week at my place and we regularly go to workshops, do quilt-shop-hops and are member of several quilters guilds. In total it took me 2 years to finish this quilt and my friend Donna Derstadt quilted it with her longarm machine.

En toen belandde ik bijna 3 jaar geleden in het quilt walhallah: de Verenigde Staten. De Rooster’s Rose Garden quilt is het resultaat van een block of the month applique klas die ik volgde in de lokale quiltwinkel, Quilters Heaven (click). De dames waarmee ik elke maand een nieuw blok begon zie ik nog steeds 2 keer per maand bij mij thuis. We gaan regelmatig naar een workshop, op quilt-shop-hops en zijn lid van enkele quilters gildes. In totaal heb ik 2 jaar aan mijn Rooster quilt gewerkt en daarna heeft mijn vriendin Donna Derstadt hem op haar longarm machine gequilt.

The pattern of this Rooster quilt is based on “Amelia’s Rose Garden” from The Vintage Spool by Verna Mosquera. The rooster is a pattern that I received from one of the ladies of the quilt group in Singapore: “A country Journal, Light Brown Leghorn Rooster” by Maggie Walker. My eldest daughter's name is Amelie, our last name translated to English is Rooster, so this combination of patterns was an easy choice to make.

Het patroon van mijn Roosterquilt is gebaseerd op “Amelia’s Rose Garden” van The Vintage Spool van Verna Mosquera. De haan is een patroon dat ik kreeg van een van de dames van de quilt groep in Singapore “A country Journal, Light Brown Leghorn Rooster” van Maggie Walker. Omdat het basis patroon van de quilt “Amelia’s Rose Garden” is en mijn oudste dochter  Amelie heet, heb ik besloten de quilt voor haar te maken. De haan heb ik toegevoegd vanwege haar achternaam: de Haan.  

And now this quilt is chosen as one of the finalist in the AQS show (click). By the way, both the pattern designers have given their permission to show this quilt and Maggie Walker is even coming herself to have a look! I hope to meet her there and than we will take a picture of us together with the quilt!

De quilt is nu dus een van de finalisten op de AQS quiltshow (klik). Beide patroon ontwerpers hebben trouwens hun toestemming gegeven om de quilt op de quiltshow in Lancaster PA te laten zien. Maggie Walker schreef me bovendien dat ze ook naar de show in Lancaster komt. Ik hoop haar te ontmoeten en dan maken we natuurlijk een foto van ons samen met mijn quilt!
