For the love of African Fabrics

A few days ago I was interviewed by Miriam Galadima - Benson of Quilts Africa Fabrics in Nigeria. We talked about our passion for African Fabrics and I showed her a few of my quilts. Due to delayed internet connection the video is sometimes blurred and not always in sync. This created hilarious moments! ;)

The interview is now on my Youtube channel.

In the first part of this video is a short introduction video to box-making included. At 21 minutes the interview starts where I tell a little bit about my creative journey and show some of my African Quilts.

Indigo Blue scarves from West Africa

Dit is een juweel van een winkel in Accra, ook al ziet het er niet zo naar uit!

De eigenaar reist rond in de omliggende landen, zoals Mali, Nigeria, Ivoorkust en Burkino Faso, en koopt daar tweedehands doeken. Prachtige Kente en indigo sjaals vinden van hieruit hun weg naar internationale verzamelaars en musea.

This is a gem of a shop in Accra! The owner searches in neighbouring countries like Mali, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso for used African textiles of quality like Kente and Indigo hand dyed scarves. From this shop many pieces find their way to international private collectors and musea.

In alle tassen zit zoveel moois verstopt! Een keuze maken is dan niet echt makkelijk...

Inside all the bags there are so many beautiful pieces hiding! To make a choice is very hard...

Al deze doeken bestaan uit meerdere stroken van aan elkaar genaaide geweven banen. Ze zijn veelvuldig gebruikt als draagdoek voor babies. Door het vele gebruik zijn ze zacht en prachtig van kleur. Sommige hebben kleine scheurtjes maar dat is niet erg. In het midden zit soms een kuiltje, de afdruk van babybillen, door het vele dragen.

All of these scarves are small woven pieces of fabric stitched together. They have a history, most of them as a baby carrier. Due to heavy usage they feel soft and the colour is beautiful. Some show little wear and tear. Baby bums often have left behind a shape in the centre of the cloth.

Uit de hele stapel heb ik twee stuks uitgezocht. Wat ik er mee ga doen, weet ik nu nog niet zeker, maar ik weet wel dat ik nog een keer naar deze prachtige winkel terugga! Dit zijn de krenten uit de pap!

I went home with two pieces only. Not sure yet what I will do with them but I am pretty sure I will go back to buy some more from this gem of a shop!!

Just a few more custom made boxes

Op de valreep, vlak voordat ik mijn koffers pak, heb ik nog een bestelling afgeleverd:

5 doosjes voor de leraren van een internationale school en een kleinere voor een assistent 

Just before I pack my suitcases again for a trip to my family I had to finish a custom order for some teachers of an International school in Accra.

Ik was gisteren nog tot 's avonds laat bezig...

I was burning the midnight oil 

Maar dan heb je ook wat! ;)

It was worth all the sweat! 

Visit to the Vlisco factory in Ghana

Het hoogtepunt van de afgelopen week voor mij was een rondleiding door de GTP (Ghana Textiles Printing) fabriek! Deze fabriek valt onder Vlisco uit Helmond en staat net even buiten Accra.

My highlight of last week was a guided tour through the GTP (Ghana Textiles Printing) factory just outside Accra! This factory is part of the Vlisco company in Holland.

De beste kwaliteit batiks uit Ghana komen hier vandaan

The quality of the batiks from GTP is simply the best in Ghana

 Een groot gedeelte van het katoen dat wordt verwerkt in de fabriek komt uit Ghana

 Most of the cotton used for the batiks are from Ghana

De stof wordt gewassen en gebleekt voordat het verfproces begint

The fabric is washed and bleached in preparation for the dying

Voormalig indigo verfbassin wat nu als wateropslag wordt gebruikt

De traditionele batik wordt nog steeds gedeeltelijk met de hand gedrukt

 de stof vooraan gaat onderdoor naar de voorkant van de machine en komt er na het stempelen langs de bovenkant weer aan deze kant uit
The fabric in front goes to the front underneath and comes out above after printing

De moderne batiks worden machinaal bedrukt en leggen een heel parkoers af voordat ze in stukken van 6 of 12 yards worden gesneden voor de verkoop

The modern batiks are printed by machine and going through a long process before being cut into pieces of 6 and 12 yards for the market

Eindelijk is het dan zover!

De verplichte vaccinaties zitten in mijn armen

Finally I am leaving for Ghana!

All necessary vaccinations are taken

Op het Birmingham Quilt Festival al wat Ghanese stofjes en info ingeslagen bij

the African Fabric Shop

 At the Birmingham Quilt Festival I bumped into the African Fabric Shop and bought some Ghanaian fabrics and some info about them

 P had nog 2 kilo ruimte in zijn koffer toen hij 2 maanden geleden vertrok en bracht deze stofjes alvast mee

P had some space left in his suitcase when he left two months ago and took these with him

De afstand van Amsterdam naar Accra is 5312km

 Aan boord van het vliegtuig kon ik op het beeldscherm de route volgen die we aflegden

The distance between Amsterdam and Accra is 3300 miles

During the flight I could follow the route taken by the airline

 Hello!

Een paar jaar geleden besloten we niet meer met al ons huisraad van land naar land te gaan en staan onze spullen opgeslagen in Nederland. Nu reizen we dus met onze koffers naar de volgende standplaats en alleen de fietsen, keukenspullen en mijn naaimachine en gereedschappen worden verscheept.

Voorlopig zitten we nog in een hotel en wachten opdat onze spullen aankomen en we in een appartementje kunnen. Tot die tijd ga ik de omgeving ontdekken.

A few years ago we decided not to move around with all our belongings any more but to put them in storage instead in Holland. We now travel with a few suitcases and only our bikes, kitchen stuff and my sewing machine and tools are being shipped.

Until they arrive and we can move into an apartment we stay at a hotel and I will start exploring the neighbourhood.

Life is like a box of chocolates

Het leven is als een doos chocolade, je weet nooit wat je zal krijgen

Elke gebeurtenis is een nieuwe combinatie van smaken, kleuren en emoties

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get

Every event is a new experience of colours, sensations and emotions

Heerlijk om te werken met leuke stofjes en als je er dan een leuk papier bij kan 

vinden is het gewoon top. Chocolaatjes erin en je hebt een leuk cadeautje!

It is so great to work with lovely fabrics and if you are able to find the matching paper for the inside it is even better! Add some chocolates and you've got the perfect present!

We waren uitgenodigd voor een Zuid-Afrikaans etentje en ik mocht niets meenemen.... 

Maar met lege handen aankomen is ook weer zo iets! 

Het doosje met chocolaatjes was het minste wat ik kon geven.

Ze was er zo weg van dat ze 2 dozen bestelde om mee te nemen naar Johannesberg voor de kerst!

We were invited for a South African dinner and I wasn't supposed to bring anything... To come empty handed is not war I like, so the box with chocolates came along.

She liked it so much she ordered 2 boxes to bring with her to Johannesburg for Christmas!

Ze kocht mooie stoffen van Robert Kaufman en samen zochten we er papier en lint bij.

Dat belletje maakt het helemaal af, net als bij de hele stapel dozen die ik je in de vorige post liet zien!

She bought some lovely fabrics from Robert Kaufman and together we found some matching papers and ribbons. The bell is just the finishing touch, just like with the stack of boxes from my last post!

Nu ga ik alles opruimen en mijn koffer weer inpakken. Het zit er alweer op, het flatje is ingericht en DH zal weer een tijdje alleen zijn potje moeten koken :(

Over een paar dagen vlieg ik weer naar Den Haag en familie, haal ik de honden op uit de kennel en bereid me voor op mijn eerste workshop kartonnage bij de Quilters Palet :) 

Time to pack my suitcase again. DH will have to look after himself for the time being :(

In a few days I will fly back home to my family, pick up the dogs from the kennel and prepare my very first workshop cartonnage on Dutch soil :)

Ontdekkingstocht

Het begint een beetje te kriebelen zo zonder naaimachine! 

Hoog tijd om er weer op uit te gaan en de ondergrondse te nemen naar het centrum. 

It starts to itch being without a sewing machine! 

Time to go out and take the subway towards the city centre

Weer boven de grond stond ik ineens middenin een studenten-demonstratie. Van alle kanten kwamen ze aan om te verzamelen om te gaan protesteren tegen het huidige onderwijssysteem. 

Eromheen een heel leger politie omdat voorgaande demonstraties uit de hand liepen...

Above ground I am suddenly surrounded by students who are just starting a 

demonstration demanding a change in their educational system. 

A lot of police is nearby because a couple of months ago the same protest turned violent...

Ik ben maar een straatje om gegaan en een museum ingeschoten. 

Hier even geen gejoel, gefluit en getrommel

I slipped into a nearby park towards a museum, where it was peaceful and quiet

Deze foto is niet helemaal scherp, maar ik vind de vlakken en snijlijnen toch een intrigerend geheel

This pictures isn't clear, but I still find the lines intriguing 

Weer buiten was het scanderen van leuzes goed te horen en besloot ik richting Plaza de Armas te gaan, het oudste plein van Santiago. In de buurt van dit plein schijnen veel winkeltjes te zijn 

vol met garen, linten, knopen, kralen etc

Outside again I still could hear the scanting of the demonstrators and I decided to go towards

Plaza de Armas, the oldest square of Santiago.

In the nearby area are shops full with yarns, ribbons, beads, buttons etc, I was told

not just one wool shop, but many more!

Even leek het erop dat de rolluiken naar beneden gingen omdat men bang was voor escalaties 

van de demonstratie die dichterbij kwam, maar gelukkig bleef het rustig 

en ging iedereen weer verder met zijn ding...

For one moment it looked like all shutters were going down as the protesters were really coming close but fortunately they opened up again and business went on as usual...

Plaza de Armas heb ik nog niet gezien, ik keek ergens anders naar ;-))

I haven't been to Plaza de Armas yet, I got carried away with something else ;-))

And the demonstration? I hope it all went smooth without any violence (click)

 De volgende keer dat ik naar Santiago kom, neem ik mijn oude Bernie mee zodat ik 

niet steeds weer kriebel krijg!

Next time I travel to Santiago, I will bring my old Bernie with me to get going 

with all these different materials!
