This is fun! I have dashed into my pile of fabrics and I am making a mess. All kinds of different pieces of fabrics from long ago go through my hands, some I have never used (shame!), others from my first quilt of 21 years ago, from my mom when she made fabric wall-hangings while I was watching her as a small kid, souvenirs from different countries I once lived, in short: I am enjoying it!
Wat is dit leuk! Ik ben mijn stoffenvoorraad ingedoken en maak er een heerlijk rotzooitje van! Allerlei lapjes van lang geleden komen naar boven, sommige nooit gebruikt (schandalig!), van mijn eerste quilt van 21 jaar geleden; van mijn moeder uit de tijd dat zij wandkleden maakte en ik als klein meisje toekeek; souvenirs uit andere landen waar ik heb gewoond, kortom: Genieten met een grote G!
Well, it isn't that bad, I still can pass along... There was a time I thought these plastic boxes were ideal to store fabrics, but I don't like it anymore. These boxes become one big mess inside where fabrics 'disappear'. That's why this project 'Building Houses from Scraps' is fantastic! Just turn over two boxes and blindly grab 365 different pieces of fabrics and cut out 5" blocks.
Eigenlijk valt het reuze mee, ik kan er nog makkelijk langs... Ooit dacht ik dat die plastic bakken de oplossing waren voor mijn lapjes, nu vind ik het maar niks. De bakken worden één grote rommel waar de lapjes in 'verdwijnen'. Daarom is dit project 'Building Houses from Scraps' geweldig! Gewoon twee bakken omkeren en 365 lapjes blind pakken en vierkantjes van 13 cm snijden.

These blocks will be divided into 5 pieces: front door, front wall, front roof, side wall and side roof and all parts in a different box. Shuffle a little bit and than taking out one part of each box for one house without looking. I think it is going to be motley, a colourful city where I would like to live. To get a little bit of a coherency I will make all windows in the same colour as well as the sky and chimneys. By the way, this is not my idea but from my quilting friend Marian, who lives in The Hague. She makes beautiful quilts. Her kids made her a blog, but she didn't use it yet. Maybe this will push her to get started! ;)
Deze vierkantjes ga ik verdelen in 5 delen: voorkant huis, zijkant huis, dakje voor, dakje zijkant en voordeur en in 5 verschillende doosjes stoppen. Daarna een beetje husselen en elk onderdeel voor een huisje bij elkaar pakken zonder te kijken. Volgens mij wordt dat een bonte verzameling, een kleurrijk stadje waar ik wel zou willen wonen. Om er een beetje samenhang in aan te brengen worden alle raampjes, lucht en schoorstenen hetzelfde. Dit is trouwens niet mijn idee maar van Marian, een quiltvriendin uit Den Haag. Zij maakt mooie dingen. Haar kinderen hebben een blog voor haar gemaakt, maar ze heeft er nog niets opgezet! Misschien is dit net het duwtje wat ze nodig heeft. ;)

This process of organized chaos reminds me of our years in Saigon, Vietnam. We lived there for 3 years and on the streets there was always something to be amazed of:

Every now and then I could find one bolt of quilting fabric, for example from Michael Miller, for only 2$ a yard!
Heel af en toe stond er één rol met quiltstof tussen, bv van Michael Miller, voor 2 euro de meter!

I love it how cutting up fabrics brings you back down to Memory Lane!
Heerlijk zoals het snijden van lapjes je ineens terug brengt in de tijd.
