A Box Update!

As promised: a picture of the final result of the hatboxes with their clasps and handles!
The blue coloured leather matches beautiful with the fabric.

And on to the next deadline for my handmade boxes!
In about 2 weeks time I will be joining the 'Wintersalon' of the Maaskoe Gallery in Rotterdam. Together with other artists I will be showing my boxes and some of my quilts and wall art! The walls and tables will be full of art and all will be for sale!

However, since we have a Parson Russell Terrier puppy my time in my studio is much less than I thought it would be! He is very interested in the cardboard pieces of the boxes... ;)

Still I managed to make a nice selection of different boxes like tea caddies,
gift boxes and boxes for all kinds of little treasures.

If you are in the area and still need some handmade Christmas presents please hop by at the
Maaskoe Gallery and maybe you will find the perfect gift for your loved ones!
The exhibition is on from December 14th until 29th, Thursday through Sunday 12.00 - 17.00.

Are you ready for Christmas?

Klaar voor pakjesavond en kerst!
Ready for Christmas!

The last couple of weeks I have been working hard in my studio in Accra. While the grey parrots are hiding from the burning sun, I am playing indoors with the African fabrics and Dutch cardboard. Every time I return to Ghana I carry a load of cardboard with me in my suitcase, and cheese of cours! This cardboard is acid-free while the local board isn't.

This charming fabric has found its way to a box.

The tassel on the box is a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol made out of brass, the so called Sankofa. The meaning of this symbol is that you have to look back to your past and learn from it.

These boxes are on the shelves of my Etsy shop right now!

The Harmattan is blowing over the city and leaves behind a layer of dust and fine sand, covering everything. The haze brings in cooler air but the windows have to stay closed to prevent the dust from coming into the house.

Time to pack my suitcases and go back home, to Holland. The past 3 months have been an emotional rollercoaster; there are so many contrasts between rich and poor, in cultures and economy. I will have to find a balance for myself within all of it.

I'm starting to find taking pictures increasingly awkward. Why do I want to document the things I see around me? Do I really want to show the poverty in which some people live? Many don't like to be photographed as it takes away part of their soul. Below is an impression of the last couple of weeks when my kids came to visit us from New York and London. We went to a few different places in Ghana.

Everywhere along the roads people walk with all kinds of items on their heads, even along the highways where cars drive past at high speed.

The colourful fabrics, fruits and flags give colour to the dusty country side.

Holiday preparations in Accra

Christmas decorations in the heat of West Africa
On the streets there are hardly any.
Just a few street stalls in the posh neighborhoods
with some fake trees

Due to the shortage of electricity there are no street lights and for that reason no festive Christmas lights to bring you already into a festive mood

On the other hand, the shopping malls are more Christmassy,
especially the fabric shops Vlisco and GTP!

On Christmas Eve everyone is going to church -all religions-
and they pray, sing and dance until the wee hours

Plastic Christmas trees do not make it into our home, so I used some of the moving boxes instead.
Following the local custom I put together a Christmas gift for our help with amongst others oil, rice, sugar and a nice body lotion

New Years Eve is also celebrated in church,
followed by a boxing match on TV and street parties in the old town
Since a few years fireworks may be sold, which are also known as 'Knock Out'
I believe there are some real KO's amongst here since much of what I see here would be illegal in Europe...

Cardboard Xmas trees and paper stars

If you live in another country for some time, you don't go out for sightseeing every day
There are enough days you stay indoors
Today is such a day because I have to wait for a mechanic.....

I have all the time to show you what I have been doing lately

My cardboard Xmas tree! ;)

From two sheets of cardboard more than one tree appears

With two long notches one tree shuffles together

Maybe we need a bit more decorations and for sure some presents
but that special feeling is coming!

Dit kadootje ging mee naar een Kertslunch
I made this to bring to a Christmas luncheon

I made some origami stars out of the same paper

Meanwhile the electric cooking plate is fixed so I can go back to the kitchen! ;)

Gift boxes for Christmas

Besides all the talk and pictures of the day trips outside and inside Santiago, Chile
I am working on a custom order of 20 boxes with a deadline this week!

Christmas Red

With dividers

and sequins on top...

measurement is 33x33cm and 11 high...

It's a lot of work and the material is not really fun to work with, it's a kind of velvet that doesn't stick well with the glue. By the end of the day I am seeing red ;)
But hey, the customer needs to be happy! She is going to put home made cookies inside
and give them away for Christmas to family and friends

The big boxes are ready and the customer is happy!
Only a few extra little ones to make and the set is compleet

my new friends in Santiago found out about my box making and wanted to do a workshop with me
and these are the boxes they made!

en hoe vind je dit naaidoosje?
and how about this cute sewing box?

Wie weet zien we elkaar daar!

Next week I am back in Holland and will do a few workshops at the Quilters Palet
Maybe we meet there!
