A new instruction video on my YouTube channel

Oops, I noticed I never published the 3rd part of the box making tutorial for the second level box on my YouTube Channel! This tutorial guides you through the proces of measuring and cutting the panels for the inside of a box likes these ones.

At my YouTube channel Hilde Hoogwaerts you can find different instruction videos of how to make boxes from scratch. 

What kind of board do I use

The basic ingredient for my boxes is grey board, aka cardboard or binder board. This kind of board is Ph neutral or acid free and is long-lasting without causing dis-colouring the material you will add on top.  You can find these kinds of material on the internet in the States under Davey Book Binders Board, Lineco Neutral Ph (or Acid Free) Binders Board or under bookbinding grey board. I normally buy sheets with a thickness of 2mm (0.07"), 2.5mm (0.098") and 3mm (0.118").

Can you do this with kids? Yes you can! They just need a little supervision when using the box cutter to cut the grey boards. I have had many kids to my box making workshops together with their moms and they always loved to make their own storage box for their pencils or scrunchies to name a few things.

Nieuwe live online workshop Caleidoscoop Quilt (NL's-talig)

Mijn live online workshop Caleidoscoop Quilt (Nederlandstalig), op basis van de techniek van Ricky Tims, gaat deze zaterdag 16 januari weer van start!

Dit is de manier om nu, tijdens deze lockdown, toch met anderen in contact te zijn en tegelijkertijd een nieuwe techniek te leren. Heel even vergeet je alles om je heen en ga je samen met andere quilters aan de slag. 

 

Deze workshop bestaat uit 3 lessen van ongeveer 1 uur waarin ik je laat zien hoe je zelf het patroon maakt, hoe je de stof snijdt en hoe je de caleidoscoop in elkaar naait.

De workshop is op zaterdag 16, 23 en 30 januari aanstaande van 10 tot 11hr. De eerste les duurt wat langer, tot ongeveer 11.30hr.

Deze workshop wordt live online gegeven via Zoom. Daarvoor is het wel nodig om dit programma te downloaden op je computer of tablet. Voor het downloaden en uitleg van Zoom klik hier

Online live Kaleidoscope Quilt Class

Dear Quilting friends,

In the last couple of weeks I have been busy designing and teaching online quilt classes for the Kaleidoscope Quilt based on the technique by Ricky Tims. In this class I show you how I use my African fabrics. The first lessons via Zoom have been fun and there is one more class coming up!

This online quilt class consists of three (3) lessons of about one hour each, once a week. This means you will have plenty of time to work on making your own design and templates, cut out the fabrics and sew the quilt together. In this workshop we work with the book "Kool Kaleidoscope Quilts" by Ricky Tims and I show you how to work with the bold African prints.

Lesson 1 is about how to design your own templates and how to cut the fabrics

Lesson 2 is about how to sew the fabrics together

Lesson 3 is a Show & Tell where everyone will show what they have made so far and we will talk about the different ways you can finish the Kaleidoscope quilt.

Live online lessons

These workshops are for small groups, 6-10 students, and are taught using the online platform Zoom, that allows you to see and interact with me and the other class participants. At the scheduled time, we will log in together, everyone can see everyone else, so you can share work and ask questions. You can view the class on a computer, tablet or phone (you may need to download the app). You will receive login instructions including links and passwords by email on the morning of the class.

This workshop started with the members of the Facebook group Quilt Africa Fabrics Tribe after my masterclass/demonstration at a live Facebook event. The upcoming quilt class is open to every one wants to know more about this technique. You can register HERE.

Eindelijk is het zover!

Voor iedereen die zo graag zelf een doos zou willen maken na het zien van mijn doosjes bekleed met stof heb ik goed nieuws!

De eerste tutorial staat al on line op mijn YouTube kanaal. Ook handig voor als je al wel eens een workshop bij mij hebt kunnen doen, maar vergeten bent hoe het ook alweer moest.

For all of you who would like to make a box after seeing my boxes covered with fabric here is good news! From now on I will be posting tutorials on a regular basis about Box Making on my YouTube channel! The first tutorial is already on line. For those of you who have been able to do a workshop with me but forgot some of the different steps, this one is for you.

With the help of my son I am getting a lot done this Holiday Season

Stap voor stap laat ik je zien wat er allemaal komt kijken bij het maken van verschillende dozen. Hoe je het karton meet, snijdt, lijmt en hoe de stof er aan de buiten- en binnenkant op aan te brengen.

Step by step I take you through the whole process of how-to make a box from scratch, how to measure and cut, glue and cover with fabric and how to work on the inside of the box.

Picture frames with African fabric

Voor een charity bazaar had ik als geintje een paar van deze fotolijstjes gemaakt.

Instead of boxes, I made a few fabric picture frames for a charity bazaar.

Deze lijstjes zijn voor foto's van 10x15cm en 13x18cm, 

en volgens mij staan ze zonder foto's ook leuk in de boekenkast ;)

These frames are for 4x6" and 5x7" pictures, 

but even without pictures they will look good on the bookshelf  ;)

Verrassend vond ik de vele positieve reacties op deze retro lijstjes!

I was pleasantly surprised with the many positive reactions!

Gecko Boxes workshops in Ghana

Dankzij de geweldige Afrikaanse stoffen die je hier in Ghana kunt kopen

zijn de workshops cartonnage een groot succes.

De afgelopen weken heb ik bijna elke week 2 a 3 workshops gegeven

en vandaag was het de laatste van het seizoen.

Back to create in Ghana

Sinds ik vorige week weer terug kwam van een maand verlof in Nederland, 

schiet ik elk vrij moment mijn kamer in.

Met de naaitafel voor het ene raam, de tafels voor de workshops bij het andere raam en mijn snijtafel tegen de muur heb ik enorm veel werkruimte gekregen!

Overal ligt wat; een quilt die klaar ligt om doorgestikt te worden, een broek waarvan een naadje los is, stof uitgestald over de snijtafel om een doos mee te gaan bekleden. 

Since my return to Accra last week from a month-long leave in Holland,

I use every free moment to be in my new studio.

With my sewing table in front of one window, the two tables for the workshops near the other and my cutting table against the wall, this room has a lot of working space!

Various projects are laying around and give me time to think about the creative proces

Morgen beginnen de workshops dozen maken en ik ben er klaar voor.

Via mijn Geckoboxes Facebook pagina maak ik reclame in Accra en langzaam aan komen er steeds meer reacties op. Heel spannend hoe dit gaat lopen. De koffers waren deze keer weer gevuld met allerlei materialen en karton om hier voor de workshops te kunnen gebruiken, dus voorlopig kan ik vooruit!

Tomorrow my workshops box making in Accra will start and I am ready to get going!

With my Geckoboxes Facebook page I try to get visitors and new participants. Very exciting to see how this will grow! My suitcases were filled again with all kinds of different materials and cardboard as well, so I will be able to continue for some time to come!

The very first Geckoboxes workshop in Ghana!

 De eerste workshop Box-making in Ghana is achter de rug!

Gisteren kwamen 4 vrouwen het uitproberen en ze waren heel erg enthousiast! ;)

The very first Box-making workshop in Ghana has taken place!

Yesterday 4 women come to my place to try it out and they were all filled with enthusiasm!

 

 

Na het zien van mijn dozen konden ze niet wachten om er zelf eentje te maken

Terwijl ik ons huisje nog lang niet op orde heb! Maar dat heeft ook geen haast: 

met vrienden samen werken is veel leuker!

 After having seen my boxes they couldn't wait to get started and make one themselves

Although I haven't quite finished settling in, I was ready to give it a go!

Doing fun things with friends gives me more energy!

Ieder bracht zelf de stof mee voor de buiten- en binnenkant. De rest lag voor ze klaar.

Niet iedereen kreeg haar doos af, maar eentje wel en dit is haar resultaat:

They all brought their own fabrics for the in- and outside of the box, I prepared the rest.

Not all of them finished the box completely except for one as you can see here:

De kralen zijn uit haar voorraad en vormen werkelijk 'the finishing touch'! 

The beads are from her stash and really are the finishing touch!

Nu moet ik gaan nadenken over verschillende mogelijkheden voor het geven van workshops

Zoals het maken van kits met voorgesneden karton en 'lappies' (Afrikaanse stofjes),

verschillende soorten dozen om te maken, etc

Kortom: het ijzer smeden terwijl het nog heet is!

Right now I have to start with a concept for giving more workshops, like preparing kits with pre-cut cardboards and a set of different African fabrics, different levels of making boxes, etc

I have to move forward and strike while the iron is hot!

Fun workshop op lokatie

In afwachting van mijn vertrek naar Ghana ben ik afgelopen vrijdag naar Zwolle gereisd

 ik was daar uitgenodigd door een quiltgroep om een workshop Busy Bee Box te komen geven

Met 2 tassen gevuld met op maat gesneden karton, lijm,

lijmrollers en bakjes, kwasten, batting en schuurpapier ging ik op weg

While waiting for my departure to Ghana I went to the other side of Holland this last Friday 

to give a workshop Busy Bee Box at a quilting bee

I filled my bags with cardboard kits, glue, brushes etc and made the trip

Het werd een supergezellige dag en de dames hebben hard gewerkt

Aan het einde van de dag stonden er 10 mooie naaidozen op tafel

It was a very entertaining day and the ladies worked hard

so by the end of the day there were 10 beautiful sewing boxes on the table

Hartelijk dank dames voor de gezellige dag en de lekkere taart! ;)

Workshop with Doris Teixeira

Op de valreep heb ik vorige week twee workshops kunnen doen met Doris Teixeira uit Brazilië

Op de eerste dag maakten we een landschap met behulp van een wateroplosbare stabilisator, tule, organza, restjes kant, garen en katoen

Last week I was able to do two workshops with Doris Teixeira from Brazil.

On the first day we made a landscape with tulle, organza, solufleece, left over lace, satins, yarns and cottons

Gelukkig kon mijn quiltmaatje K. Fassett stof voor mij meenemen uit Amerika en met organza van de markt kon ik aan de slag. Het project was te groot voor een dag, er moet nog veel meer gequild worden, maar ik ben blij met het begin. Hieronder is het werkstuk van Doris

My quilting buddy was able to bring me some K. Fassett fabrics from the States and together with the organzas bought at the local market I was able to get started. Unfortunately we were not able to finish this project in one day, there is a lot more quilting to be done, but I am happy with the result so far. Below is the Landscape piece made by Doris Teixeira

Op de tweede dag gingen we aan de gang met organza en noppenfolie!

Omdat materiaal zoals Tyvek niet verkrijgbaar is in Zuid Amerika of vreselijk duur is, is Doris opzoek gegaan naar een goedkope oplossing en is met noppenfolie gaan spelen. 

Voor dit project hebben we eerst een stukje organza, daar bovenop noppenfolie, met de noppen naar boven, en daar weer een laag organza opgelegd. Met meerdere draden door de naald zijn we halve cirkels gaan stikken. Door de spanning van de onderdraad heel hoog in te stellen, gaat het werkstuk vervormen. Deze halve cirkels vullen we vervolgens door allerlei draadjes tussen de bovenste laag organza en de noppenfolie in te brengen. Daarna stikken we de cirkels dicht en gaan meerdere keren rond.

On the second day we made some small projects and experimented with organza and bubble wrap. Because Tyvek is not available in South America Doris started to use bubble wrap instead.

For this project we used a layer of organza, one layer of bubble wrap and on top another layer of organza. With a high tension on the bobbin and more colourful threads through the needle we made some interesting pieces

 

 

 

 Doris Teixeira vertelde dat ze het liefste de stoffen bewerkt met machinaal borduren.

 En dat is goed zien in haar werk

Doris Teixeira explained she simply loves embroidery by machine, not so much with the standard stitches, but by making them herself.
