Back to the studio!

It's been a while since I posted last time but that doesn't mean I haven't been doing anything! My strength is coming back, physically as well as emotionally, and very important: it's starting to itch to go back into my studio and start making again!

I was lucky to have had an order to make hatboxes and slowly get back into making. First I made a sample with African fabrics which turned out really well if I may say so ;)

Done!

After this one was approved I was asked to make 8 more with fabric provided for by 'Queen of Your Castle', a special coaching program for women to build up inner strength.
They embroidered their logo on the fabric for the lid before giving it to me. The handles and clasps will be added onto the boxes later by the client. Hope to show you a picture later!

Happy to be making again!

Cheers, Hilde

Another Box talk post ;)

I have been a bit quite with blogging but busy with cardboard in the past few weeks. Especially when I have no worked out plan for a quilt, I love to play with fabric in another way. Slowly a new quilt plan will come up... At the same time I am working on some orders for boxes!

Playing with an elegant African Print design

With this elegant African print I made a new box.

The outside of the box is covered with one whole piece of fabric.

On the inside of the box I prefer to use a solid colour for the ridge, the 'neck'. Depending on the fabric design on the outside I want this colour to be more or less in contrast.

By using one piece of fabric only for the outside, the design pattern is folded around the box and comes together in an unexpected way. It is always a surprise how the lines meet where the lid and bottom part come together.

This is a tea box but of course it can be used for other purposes as well, like jewellery, keys, etc.

Never a dull moment when playing with African designs!

New batch of boxes made and delivered

After a wonderful 'home-leave' in Holland and Italy with family and friends, hiking and biking, fresh air and full shelves at the groceries, I am back in warm and humid Ghana. It's a bit of a struggle to get back into my routine so I asked the local store that sells my boxes, if they needed anything more. Yes, please!!! Great, I have something to do!

En paar dagen later:
After a few days work:

First things first: cappuccino and then the final touches to the boxes

Before bringing them to the shop I need to take pictures, just in case they want to order a similar one

A few close-ups because I love the combination of colours and fabric prints.

Showcase box for a very special glass

I am back in my home country and enjoy being able to be with friends and family. Immediately I bought some flowers and finally got a haircut again.
There was an order as well waiting for me to be made, this time a showcase box for a very special wine glass: a Pythagorean glass. Never heard of but as they gave me the measurements I just went ahead.

Just a few more custom made boxes

Just before I pack my suitcases again for a trip to my family I had to finish a custom order for some teachers of an International school in Accra.

I was burning the midnight oil

Maar dan heb je ook wat! ;)
It was worth all the sweat!

Gecko Boxes workshops in Ghana

Made in Ghana

Even een show and tell van een paar dozen die deze week gemaakt
zijn tijdens de workshops beginners box making.

Just a show and tell of some of the boxes that were made during
the workshops Box Making this past week

...and I made this Jewelry box which is going on the shelf of my 'shop',
unfortunately I can't sell on Etsy as sending from Ghana is too expensive

Back to create in Ghana

Since my return to Accra last week from a month-long leave in Holland,
I use every free moment to be in my new studio.
With my sewing table in front of one window, the two tables for the workshops near the other and my cutting table against the wall, this room has a lot of working space!
Various projects are laying around and give me time to think about the creative proces

Tomorrow my workshops box making in Accra will start and I am ready to get going!
With my Geckoboxes Facebook page I try to get visitors and new participants. Very exciting to see how this will grow! My suitcases were filled again with all kinds of different materials and cardboard as well, so I will be able to continue for some time to come!
