Challenged to make an African star in XXXL

After seeing my African kaleidoscope quilts a friend asked me if I could make her a piece like that as a backdrop for a party she is going to give in the near future. A challenge I am happy to take on! But where do I begin! It took me some weeks to figure this out.

My design wall is way too small for this!!! ;)

Once back in Accra it started to brew and finally I could set myself to start cutting the fabrics. Of course I made it more difficult by using a 5-point star instead of a six-point star! During the proces I realised it would be very difficult to make this into a square or rectangle without twisting the design out of shape.

De meubels moeten er voor opzij!
The furniture had to move to the side to make space!

Because there isn't so much to do for me in Accra and I don't have many social commitments, I have all the time in the world to explore new combinations of colours and shapes.

In action with the last bit of sewing

This piece is not quilted and has no backing yet. I just want to take some time to think about the best way to handle this.

The guards of the compound where we live and the gardener had some difficulties keeping up this patchwork piece!

Hight is 3.35 m (11 ft) - perimeter is 11 m (36 ft)

When I told them that this project is build up around the 'Black Star' they were in awe. The black 5-point star is a very important symbol which is on the Ghanaian flag. When I draped the piece around me like a scarf, they took care the 'Black Star' was well visible.

Quilts and colour therapy

Om een leuke gevarieerde quilt te maken heb je veel verschillende stoffen nodig;
hoe meer hoe beter!

To make a quilt with a variety in colours you need many different fabrics; the more the merrier!

Machine quilting my friends quilt

One of my Dutch friends, who I got to know in Saigon - Vietnam and now lives in San Francisco, asked if I could make her a quilt with African fabrics. It will bring back fond memories of trip she once made to Ghana. If you start cutting strips of 4.5" of many different fabrics you end up having enough for a set of quilts! And because there isn't so much else to do here in Accra, it is better to spend all your time behind the sewing machine!

The next pictures show the influence of colours on its surroundings. The solid colours in the sashing all have their own impact on the painting on the wall behind the sofa. The painting is from Nicholas Kowalski, a painter from Accra.

Spiderweb design on African fabric

It's never a boring moment when playing with the different African designs on fabric!
What do you think of this spiderweb design?

Dit doosje is 12 x 16 cm en 8 cm hoog
This little box measures 4.5 x 6.5" and is 3" high

Every time again it's so much fun to see how the designs wraps around the cardboard box

Fun with African Wax Print 'Nsu Bra'

One of my favourite designs of the African fabrics is the 'Nsu Bra' print. This is from the Ghanaian Twi language and means water well. In Nigeria it's  called Plague-Plague because the circulair designs reminds people of the vinyl records. This design works great on the two-tier jewellery box!

Last stitches to the African Night star quilt

All 9 blocks of this 8 point - 6 point - 5 point star quilt are finished! Sometimes some other projects came on top of the pile and were finished first. But with the end in sight, this project got more speed. These are the 9 blocks!

All blocks are pieced by hand because of all the Y-seams. A very relaxing and slow sewing project. Right now I only need to sew the blocks together and start quilting. Of course this will be done by hand as well!

For this quilt I only used left over pieces of African fabrics and some African batiks. Here I wrote about this quilt before.

Keep calm and sew-on

Dipo Festival at a Krobo tribe in Ghana

A few months ago I was able to witness the Dipo Festival at a Krobo tribe in a village just outside of Accra. During this traditional week of ceremonies, girls are prepared for the transition to womanhood. In addition to the pride it brings to the girls and their families, they are convinced that the girls, who successfully go through the Dipo rituals before touching a man, become a very good wife. The goal is that the girls maintain their virginity before they marry. This tradition is celebrated only by the Krobo tribe, one of the more than 50 different tribes in Ghana.

During the Dipo Festival the girls are given lessons in dance, music, cooking, the household chores and what is expected from them when they are married. On the very last day they dress in beautiful African cloths (pagnes)

The Paramount Queen

The 'Paramount Queen' explains what happens to their bodies during the hormonal cycle and gives them some sex education. During the Dipo time she travels around to visit more Krobo families to educate as many girls as possible.

After the talk the girls splash some water over themselves to clean their body and soul. The leaves in the bowl make the water holy.

On the very first day of the Dipo Festival, their heads are shaved except for a small dot

When they have successfully finished all the rites of the past week, the girls dress up on this last day for the final rite at the 'Sacred Stone'. The white cloths draped around their bodies confirm their virginity and the many beads around their hips show how well to do their family is. The blue beads stand for tenderness and affection, the yellow beads for adulthood and prosperity. This is the only time where some of the girls expose their breasts to prove their puberty. No surprise suddenly a lot of young men show up!

With a white clay paste, stripes are applied to their body. With a stick and often a wooden cross in their hands, the girls walk in small groups to the 'Sacred Stone'. The leaf between their lips ensures that the Dipo girls keep quite and stay focused while walking to the Sacred Stone. Some girls carry the intestine wall of a goat on their head which will be left at the Sacred Stone. It is believed this will help them to be a good cook to their future men.

Leaves between the lips

The Sacred Stone stands in a shrine where no one else is allowed in to. At this shrine their virginity is proven and afterwards they are carried back to the house on the back of a boy while screaming and yelling. This boy is usually their boyfriend.
