Verder spelen met Vlisco

Ik heb weer verder gespeeld met de Vlisco stoffen die hier in Ghana bij de GTP fabriek worden gemaakt. Dit is wat er aan vooraf ging: Pure GTP - Vlisco fabrics.
Daarna heb ik de caleidoscoop verder afgemaakt en op de design wall geplaatst. Eerst dacht ik dat het goed was, maar na een paar keer kijken vond ik dat er te weinig gebeurde... 

I continued playing with the Vlisco fabrics I purchased two weeks ago. This is what I did with them last time: Pure GTP - Vlisco fabrics. 
I continued with the proces of making a kaleidoscope and left it on the design wall for a couple of days. At first I thought it was just fine, but then I realised something was missing...

First step: something is missing

De buitenste groene ring vond ik te overheersend en besloot deze te onderbreken met twee andere stoffen. In de binnenste ring bracht ik ook wat meer dynamiek aan met een andere kleur blauw.

I decided the outer circle in green was too dominant and wanted to break that by adding two other fabrics. In the inner circle I added another blue tone to change the dynamics.

Second step: breaking the green dominance and added a new blue colour

In de volgende stap vroeg ik mij af wat er zou gebeuren als ik de groene stof met blauwe strepen en oranje golven een kwart slag zou draaien. Hierdoor gaat de oranje golf als het ware in een cirkel rond.

In the next step I wondered what would happen if I turned the green fabric with blue stripes and orange wave sideways. That way the orange wave would go around the circle.

Step 3: the orange wave goes around

Om meer verband te krijgen in het geheel vond ik dat de gele ruit en blauw/groene stof nogmaals terug moesten komen. 

In order to get more unity in the overall layout I felt I needed to let the yellow and blue/green fabrics come back once more.

Het hangt nu een paar dagen in deze samenstelling en het voelt goed!

Nu kan het in elkaar patchen gaan beginnen! Als het klaar is, is 1 meter in het vierkant groot.

This composition has been on the design wall for some days and it still feels good to me!

I finally can start patching. This will be 1 meter square when finished.

Quilting keeps me sane!

Dankzij mijn passie voor quilten heb ik geen pilletjes nodig om geestelijk gezond te blijven. Zeker als je vaak moet verhuizen naar een nieuw land en continent. Elke keer is het weer een grote uitdaging, zelfs als het voor de 10de keer is. Zoals onze laatste verhuizing nu een ruim jaar geleden naar Ghana in West Afrika. Het opbouwen van een nieuwe kenniskring gaat, nu kinderen het huis uit zijn, niet via de school maar via de passie voor stoffen en quilten!

My passion for fabrics and quilting keeps me sane! Especially if you move around internationally from continent to continent. Our last move (#10) to Ghana, West Africa, proved to be a new challenge, but thanks to the African fabrics I manage again!

Het ontmoeten van gelijkgestemde zielen ging deze keer redelijk snel dankzij een quiltvriendin in Santiago - Chili. Via via kwam ik in contact met Daniël, een struise blonde dame uit Namibië met een grote liefde voor de Afrikaanse prints! 

Daniël sleepte mij in het begin overal mee naartoe en zij was de eerste die mijn workshop 'dozen maken met Afrikaanse stoffen' uitprobeerde. Laaiend enthousiast maakt zij sindsdien voor al haar vriendinnen een doos voor hun verjaardag. Vorige week nodigde ze mij uit voor haar verjaardag....

Thanks to a quilt friend in Santiago - Chile I came in contact with Daniel from Namibia who is infected with the fabrics virus as well. She introduced me to different places in Accra and she was one of the first to take my workshop 'box making with African prints'. Ever since she has been making boxes for her friends' birthdays. Last week she invited me to her birthday...

Ik wist meteen wat ik voor haar wilde maken: een caleidoscoop quiltje in haar favoriete kleuren en prints!

I knew immediately what to make for her: a kaleidoscope quilt in her favourite colours and prints!

Zoals het met elke quilt gaat, is het mooi om te zien hoe de kleuren elkaar beïnvloeden en hoe de stofdesigns elkaar versterken. Het originele design is van Ricky Tims, op dit filmpje is goed te zien hoe hij te werk gaat.

Ik ben dus echt heel blij dat er in dit land zoveel leuke stoffen te krijgen zijn want anders was ik allang gillend gek geworden!

Pure GTP - Vlisco fabrics

Heerlijk spelen met de stoffen die ik van de week gekocht heb!

I am having fun with the Ghana fabrics I bought this week at the market!

Wat een kleurenspel! Het is elke keer weer spannend om te zien hoe de kleuren elkaar versterken.

What a change of colours! Every time again it is exciting to see how colours enforce each other.

Ik ben pas halverwege dus wordt vervolgd!

Trip to the market

Mijn quilt vriendin Charlotte en ik zijn naar de markt geweest, eentje wat verder uit de buurt, waar je de lokale Vlisco stof, GTP, per yard zou kunnen kopen...

Midden in een drukke straat met enorme gaten in het asfalt, staat een groot vierkant gebouw van twee verdiepingen. Op de begane grond zijn alle etenswaren te koop, op de eerste verdieping Chineze goederen en boven op de tweede zijn de stofwinkeltjes en naaiateliers.

Together with my quilting friend Charlotte I went to the market in one of the older neighbourhoods of Accra where you should be able to buy GTP fabric (Vlisco owned, Ghana printed fabric) by the yard...

In the midst of a bustling street full with potholes stands a big 3 stories high building. On the ground floor is the food and vegetables section, second electronics and on the third floor are the tailors and fabric shops.

Gevonden! De dame die bereid is GTP (Ghana Textile Printing) stof te knippen!

And there she is: she, who is willing to cut GTP (Ghana Textile Printing) fabrics!

Alle winkels die GTP verkopen weigeren minder dan 6 yards, 5.5 meter, te verkopen. De buitenlandse namaak uit China wordt wel per yard verkocht. Dit heeft allemaal te maken met de prijzen die de verkopers moeten betalen voor hun voorraad. Het is dus voor mij heel verleidelijk om de Chinese copies te kopen. Maar ik heb veel liever de originele lokaal gemaakte versie!

Almost all shops who sell GTP fabrics do not sell less than 6 yards. While for the Chinese fabric with African prints (the copies) that is not a problem. This has all to do with the prices shop owners have to pay for the fabrics. So for me it is often tempting to buy the Chinese versions instead. But I rather buy the locally produced original fabrics!

15 minutes of play

 Ik ben weer thuis in warm en stoffig Accra en moet weer even omschakelen. ;)

Na het maken van de caleidoscoop quilts en al die dozen met Afrikaanse stoffen in het afgelopen jaar heb ik een mand vol met restjes. Eerst daar maar eens een slag mee slaan voordat er weer een nieuwe quilt of doos uit mijn handen komt!

Back home again in humid and dusty Accra. I need to switch the button and slow down to what Accra has to offer. ;)

After making all the Kaleidoscope quilts and making boxes with the African prints in the past year I have a basket full with scraps. Before I start a new project I want to do something with those first!

Just a little bit of all the scraps I have...

Ik ben een groot fan van Victoria Vindlay Wolfe en haar techniek om van restjes weer nieuwe stof te maken middels "15 minutes of play" staat mij erg aan.

Een paar keer per week even gedachteloos lapjes aan elkaar naaien is een welkome afwisseling bij het uitpuzzelen van de meer ingewikkelde quilts.

I am a huge fan of Victoria Findlay Wolfe and her technique of making new fabric out of scraps called "15 minutes of play". Every now and then just randomly sewing fabric together.

Heel snel heb je zo weer een nieuw stuk stof bij elkaar. 

Met een leuke template uit haar webshop snij je daar dan weer een nieuwe vorm uit. 

Within no time a new piece of fabric is ready to be cut into a shape.

I use the diamond template bought in her webshop.

Dit wordt gewoon een soort van nakomertje van alle projecten van het afgelopen jaar en die in 2017 gaan komen!

This new project will be the side-kick of all projects that have been in the past year and will come in 2017!

African Kaleidoscope # 6 - "Star Fruit" (46x46cm)

Het quiltje voor de miniatuurtentoonstelling van de Quiltersgilde, dat in maart plaatsvindt, is klaar!

Met de naaimachine in elkaar gezet en met de hand gequilt.

This little one is finished and will stay behind in Holland to be shown at the Miniature exhibition of the Quilters Guild in March. I pieced it by machine and quilted it by hand.

Baby quilt (90x120cm)

 Op het randje van het oude jaar heeft mijn nichtje heeft een zoontje gekregen! In de afgelopen paar weken heb ik voor haar deze quilt gemaakt terwijl ik genoot van het Hollandse weer en leven. Man man, wat een verschil met Accra! Even op de fiets naar de quiltwinkel voor mooi quiltgaren of iets online bestellen... Zoals deze witte stof met opdruk van 'De wolf met de zeven geitjes' is van de Efteling en heb ik HIER gekocht.

On the brink of New Year's eve my niece delivered a baby boy and I made her a quilt while enjoying the good life in Holland. Just hopped on the bike to go to the quilt shop some quilting thread and ordered things online...Like the fabric with 'The wolf and seven little goats' which I ordered HERE.

En een project wat ik je nog niet kan laten zien... ;)
