A few weeks ago Dini asked if I could make her a replica of an old sewing box she inherited from
her great-great grandmother. Most likely it was made around 1860!
It has completely fallen apart but she could not part from it because of the sentimental value.
The sewing box measured 36x25x10 cm and below the lid it had a section with dividers
and below that a drawer. On top used to be a lovely picture.
To the sides there were still copper handles and a lock on the front
Together we looked for the best colour of bookbinders linen to put around the new sewing box,
one that would match the picture
The original box had a pattern which I maintain on the new box as well. Therefore I choose a Florentine paper, which also breaks with the plain colour of the linen
With the old box came 4 pieces of wood and 4 metal corners as well.
After some research I noticed they had been on top of the box as decoration.
The lock on the front closes with a sort of clip system.
If you squeeze 2 handles on the lower part, the lock opens and the bottom flap falls down
Now you can see the drawer hidden inside
In both parts, top section and drawer, I placed dividers in the same spot as in the original box
It was a huge puzzle to sort this all out, but am very happy with the outcome!
If I had the space to put it somewhere, I would make another one for myself!
