Where to have your passport picture taken in Ghana?

P send me a message last week if I had some passport pictures left to extend our residence visa for Ghana. We needed some urgently because 'our guy' who arranges this for us was going on a holiday soon. The next moment I passes by this photo studio!

Inside it looked clean and organised with a mirror and a small chair in a corner. The owner was not too busy at that moment so I could get my picture taken immediately. The shop was divided into two rooms, one for taking pictures and an office for developing, printing and payments.

Am I allowed to smile? Do my ears need to be visible? Always such a fun thing to do ...

With natural light and a simple camera the picture was taken quickly.

In the corner on the floor of his office the printer was ready on top of a cardboard box. After about one minute later the printer produced a set of 4 perfect passport photo's.

With a simple scissor the pictures were cut to measurement. Within 5 minutes and a payment of 20Ghc I stepped outside again where his family was playing a game of 'Snakes and ladders'. It is good to know things can still be done in a simple way, without bells and whistles ;)

Playing with an elegant African Print design

With this elegant African print I made a new box.

The outside of the box is covered with one whole piece of fabric.

On the inside of the box I prefer to use a solid colour for the ridge, the 'neck'. Depending on the fabric design on the outside I want this colour to be more or less in contrast.

By using one piece of fabric only for the outside, the design pattern is folded around the box and comes together in an unexpected way. It is always a surprise how the lines meet where the lid and bottom part come together.

This is a tea box but of course it can be used for other purposes as well, like jewellery, keys, etc.

Never a dull moment when playing with African designs!

Buying African fabrics from the Cloth Man

The cloth man came by today and his fabrics looked so attractive to me I couldn't resist!

Please come inside the gate and show me what you have please.

Tussen de lappen zit zijn schaar verstopt. Elke lap is precies in yards opgevouwen.

In between the pieces of fabric his scissors are hiding. Every piece of fabric is precisely folded on the yardage. If you need 2 or 3 yards he will find the correct fold and slides his scissors of the exactly through it.

Almost all Cloth men who are selling their goods on the street in Accra are from Niger. They buy the fabrics in Lome, Togo, and come to Accra to sell it for double the amount. I don't mind paying a bit more then on the market, this way I can help him and his family. I prefer doing this then seeing them on the streets begging for money.

Before and after ;)

Hah! His load has become a lot less for the rest of the day and I got my fabric fix! ;)

A total of 29 yards...

Indigo Blue scarves from West Africa

This is a gem of a shop in Accra! The owner searches in neighbouring countries like Mali, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso for used African textiles of quality like Kente and Indigo hand dyed scarves. From this shop many pieces find their way to international private collectors and musea.

Inside all the bags there are so many beautiful pieces hiding! To make a choice is very hard...

All of these scarves are small woven pieces of fabric stitched together. They have a history, most of them as a baby carrier. Due to heavy usage they feel soft and the colour is beautiful. Some show little wear and tear. Baby bums often have left behind a shape in the centre of the cloth.

I went home with two pieces only. Not sure yet what I will do with them but I am pretty sure I will go back to buy some more from this gem of a shop!!

Happy Fourth of July!

My local batik store had two nice fabrics on the shelves which I could not refuse: red, white and blue!

Perfect voor een feestelijk Amerikaans doosje!
Perfect fit for a 4th of July box!

Cheers! Hilde
